Although Windows 7 is better than Windows XP and Vista. But why some users downgrade from Windows 7 to Vista or XP?

One reason might be compatibility. I know some games don't run at all or have issues running on Windows 7, for example World of Warcraft, which reportedly has issues on Windows 7 but runs fine on Windows XP and Vista.

This may not only be the most moronic post I've ever read, it's also among the most insulting.

"People like what they know" Applies to everybody, not just "old people".   ::)

For example, I prefer Windows over Linux, because I know it better. 23 hardly counts as a senior.

Whatever, Grandpa.  ;D

That post shouldn't be insulting or moronic. It's quite true. A lot of people don't like change, especially when they struggle with understanding computers in the first place.

Out of curiosity, who do you think developed computers in the first place?  If was a bunch of "old" people.  A bunch of "old" people were developing computers before most of us were born.

True, however...

A little work on the presentation is needed here.

One reason might be compatibility. I know some games don't run at all or have issues running on Windows 7, for example World of Warcraft, which reportedly has issues on Windows 7 but runs fine on Windows XP and Vista.

Crysis is another one.  It'll work in Vista compatibility mode on 7, but not out-of-the-box.

Also Windows 7 dropped support for Windows Meeting Space and Dreamscene.  I know these two things aren't widely used (and the latter can be hacked back in), but still.

The classic Start Menu is another thing that was "removed."  Yes, I know there are ways to get it back in Windows 7, but not out of the box, and if it's not out of the box, people are going to shun it.  Why?  Because...

A lot of people don't like change

I hated XP and wanted to go back to 98.

Then I realized it wasn't a hate for XP as much as it was a hate for change. Also, that and the fact that I was quite certain I would have a lot of work to do to get my programs working properly in NT. (turned out the issues I did have with it were minor)

So as i said before people like what they know even if the new might work better. And by the way most Granny's are to computer illiterate to understand how to turn the f-ing computer on and off! So before you get all pissy why don't you take a step back and look at the majority instad of the minority

Yes. this applies to everybody. wether it be people working in a mill using old but perfectly functional equipment or factory workers who prefer to keep their jobs rather then be replaced by a bunch of machines. People instinctively know that every change brings a chance for failure.

Most "granny's?" seriously? we're not talking about old spinsters here, you said "old people" you can't later decide that you actually meant a more strict subset. you already said old people. Besides, Most people <CAN> figure out how to turn a computer on and off, your making a brash and unrealistic over simplification using the obviously <minority> samplings you've observed.

Well, guess what? Obviously you don't know very many old people! typographers in their 70's and 80's use computers to make their type design faster (faster, not easier), and the very same "old people" you so quickly dismiss as part of the majority (what the *censored* are we talking about here? Florida? Last time I checked people +65 were not a majority demographic) also contain the majority of people that brought the computer into existence. John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley are all "old people" but without them you wouldn't be in any position to tell them how useless and stupid they and their demographic are. (I'm not going to spell out what they did, since if you are as enlightened as you evidently believe you should already know).

returning to your first post:

or some people like what they no. like old people or people that dont understand computers

People that don't understand computers? Can you explain the intricate workings of the logic gates in any given CPU? No? Neither could I, probably. so we don't understand computers either. Do you have the PCI specification memorized? No? can you create a basic PCI video card using two pieces of gold foil, three 64K-bit memory chips and a sodering iron? No? Neither could I.

My point is, before you make an over-generalization you should at least make sure that you understand what the *censored* you are overgeneralizing. saying "Old people" is an overgeneralization. saying "people that don't understand computers" is an overgeneralization too, because not only does it imply that old people as a whole (with absolutely zero exceptions) understand computers, but it also is completely open to the very definition of "understand" that you are using, which is impossible to ascertain. What did you mean by "understand"? ability to start and use notepad? the ability to construct a small scale model of the UNIVAC? Thankfully your blatant and completely terse method of posting leaves a lot of content out at the expense of increase ambiguity, and then when people attack that ambiguity based on what they resolve out of it you turn into defense mode and start saying we should "all look at the big picture and look at the majority rather then the minority" and yet, in a critical final ironic twist, your entire argument was based on your observations of a minority of what you are calling the majority, otherwise you would be well aware of the fact that "old people" are not a majority demographic as well as the fact that the ambiguous nature of your classification of "people that don't understand computers" makes it impossible to measure at all.

Additionally...

wait a minute! Of course! when he said "Granny" he didn't mean granny, because Granny is the short form of SUPER GRANNY! and she wears a cape and flies around the world saving people from knitting disasters.

<group of old sterotype folk sitting on a park bench>

"Oh NO! I'll never finish this sweater before my grandchildren arrive"

stereotypical grumpy old man: "Why! Back in my day we had to knit our own grandchildren out of old lint from the dryer! we didn't get all lazy and have our kids make them for us!"

<Super granny theme song>

sterotypical grumpy old man: What is that awful racket! back in my day, music had soul, it did! Why I recall the day the music died as if it were yesterday

"What's that in the sky? Marcel?"

stereotypical grumpy old man: Back in my day we didn't ask two questions in the same paragraph, inpolite it was, why I recall I once asked my father, 'father, can I borrow two-pence? please?' and he rightly smacked me upside the head, 'we work hard for our two-pence around here sonny' he said. And he made me smoke a whole pack of cigars he did!

marcel:what? hold on, let me get my glasses...

<ten seconds later>

"it's a bird!"

stereotypical grumpy old man: back in my day birds knew to keep  their distance from the me, you didn't have any birds asking no man out for a date, and you didn't see them exposing their naughty thigh bits like a prostitute, nope, thems were simpler times.

"It's a plane!"

stereotypical grumpy old man: back in my day, we didn't have no fancy flying machines, we were happy if we could slide on a cardboard box down a grassy hill"

"It's SUPER GRANNY"

stereotypical grumpy old man: eh! Super granny you say sounds like my kind of girl!

marcel: but, stereotypical grumpy old man, you'll need to double-date with her sister too!

stereotypical grumpy old man: What? Why back in my day, we didn't have siblings, I remember when I was a young lad, all my brothers and sisters hated me horribly because I was an only child.

"OMG! super granny! I saw her on TV!"

stereotypical grumpy old man: back in my day, we didn't have no television, why, for entertainment we'd just slap a blind man on a unicycle and have a good ol' time watching the feller fall down! sometimes we'd find a richer and we'd make their guide dawg ride a tricycle, good times, those.

Super granny: never fear, dear, here, let me fix up that stitching for you

And with that, she'd pull out her trusty pair of PURE GOLD knitting needles, use her super knitting speed to knit 10 percent faster then the average knitter, and take off into the sky again.

"Wow! she must have been great at track and field!"

stereotypical grumpy old man: back in my day we didn't have no wimmins in the track and field, no sir, sports was a mans domain, why I recall when my sister Sally wanted to do the long jump, there was much bickering, and my father said "Eat this chestnut!" and that's when he gave me the train set that my older brother wanted, at which point the rivalry between me and the neighbours dog began...

Loved the posts as always BC but my take on the original question is this.
People will sometimes revert make to the thing they know the most ergo they move back into there 'comfort zone'.
It's not necessarily about how much you know or how little for that matter but about what suites the individual.
I used to use XP a fair few years back and have now been using Vista for 3-4yrs and you know what, Vista is now my comfort zone where XP used to be. I can't imagine myself going back to XP as I have moved on.. maybe not forward but on.
I can certainly imagine myself using Win7 in the near future as I like to test myself and learn new things. Oh and I do use Linux as well but not as often as Vista.

That's just me and as I say everyone is different.  :)

Several years ago, my parents lived in a 55+ community.  EVERYONE there had a computer.  They used it mostly for email to keep in touch with their kids and grandkids. and to send pictures back and forth.  A lot did games, cookbooks, etc.

Most of them couldn't change out a hard drive, but then most of the general populace can't either.

I am well over fifty. The people I know use computers and yes some are older than I am. I have worked with Auto C.A.D. for the past twenty years. I have had more computers than I care to remember. I have spent way to much money on them. I do understand people wanting to keep what they know. I have an old rifle that I know when I shoulder it where the bullet is going to hit all the way out to five hundred yards. On a new rifle I would have to learn all that stuff all over again and that takes time and money. Time that is so all important at this stage of my life. In the past year I have gone from Windows Vista to Windows 7 on the wife's new lap top to changing over to Linux Mint and Ubuntu because I have two operating systems that were made by Microsoft that just don't work and can't get any help from them to make them work. So I will not buy any more stuff from them. So I have to learn some thing new. Spend the time because some Co. can't spend the time to make there stuff they sold work. What you  said has nothing to do with old people. It has to do with time. People not wanting to spend time to learn some thing new. Did we need Windows Vista? No Windows XP worked fine. You still have people using XP because they don't want to spend the time to learn a new system. That isn't a bad thing it is just the way things are. I have an old computer that it's only job is to run a Auto C A D program. It works as good today as the day it was built by my son. It has never been up graded. Should it be? Why? It works fine just the way it is. I built my wife a computer two years ago. She surfs the net, uses it for her sewing machine and camera. Should I up date her computer to Windows 7? So she would have to learn a new OS and get up dates for her sewing machine. No it will stay as is. When it breaks it will be repaired and  used as it is till it is no longer needed. The reason for this is time. There is no reason for her to have to spend the time to learn a all new system just to have a new system when the system she has works. The reason people down grade to windows XP or Vista is because they don't want to spend the time or money to learn a new system and change all there software to work on that system and they are not all old people. On this site you will hear people talk about how great XP is and that there is no reason to change. I don't think that they are all old. Though most may not want to spend the money to up grade when every thing is working fine. I have a system set up with XP so the grandkids can play a bunch of old games I have on it. It will never be up graded because it wouldn't play the games if it was.

Space? Windows 7 fits in my little Shuttle mini PC.

Well that maybe the case, however the total space used  for XP's windows folder is along the lines of 2 gigs of space that has to be allocated. with WIN 7 its along the lines of 15 gigs.... as far as RAM is concerned xp in its most rudimentary form it only used 150 MBs and 7 uses 1 gig plus of RAM

I'd have to agree/disagree with this gentlemen, I have a computer that its only job is to do Auto C.A.D. and it works just fine, but upgrading the hardware with a better video card does help but it is not required but it does make rendering and other graphics card intensive word faster.  I whole heartedly agree with him as far as time goes, when I first upgraded to WIN 7 I hated the change but with time I grew to absolutely love the change of OS's.

Oh. He meant disk space. Anyhow, hard drives and RAM are cheap now. No point in trying to cram a 2010 operating system into 2005 hardware.

Or just as an after thought we stop entertaining this endless argument which suites no purpose.
This is to trolls as Cat-nip is to kittens.

I say we all walk away... but by all means carry on.

If you want a really small operating system look at Linux Puppy. It will run on 64MB of ram and is only 98.6MB in size. You can run it from a USB drive and you don't need a hard drive. Now that is small. Easy Peasy isn't that small. It is more modern and built to be used on net books. It can also be ran from a 4GB USB drive. Both will surf the net, play DVD, and all the other things that we do with Vista,Seven and XP and they do it in a hole lot less space. I set up one of my computers with Linux Mint, I loaded it with the same pictures and files that I had on it with Vista. Vista took up just under 50GB of space. Linux Mint takes up 7GB with the same files and pictures. The 160 GB HD will never get filled up with Linux Mint. I didn't have to load picture editing software it came with it or antivirus software and such because it isn't needed. It also came with Open office and a bunch of other stuff that if you want in Microsoft what ever it is an add on. Can you tell I have had it with Microsoft? You all have a good day now.

A lot of things in life have no point, like cow-tipping and drinking one's own urine, but they're entertaining nonetheless. This discussion is on topic for the most part, so there's no reason for it to end. Heaven forbid anyone should share an opinion, which is what was asked for by the OP.

Downgrading was a significant portion of my business from the time Vista came out until recently. I have been asked to downgrade a few Windows 7 systems to XP, but that's it.

My grandmother is 80 years old. She's still running an old Pentium that I had years and years ago. It has 256MB RAM and runs Windows 98. Do I need to give her an upgrade to XP, Vista, or 7? Why would I? All she does is email on it (seriously, she only has Juno email, no internet service). She knows exactly how to do the things she needs to do on it and that's all that matters to her.

I just had a disturbing insight into your personal life that I would have rather not had.

Not saying they're things I do personally, I'm just saying.

Besides, "it's sterile and I like the taste."

Of your own urine?  Whew, quaxo, get some counseling, dude!  Is this something you picked up in Thailand?   :o

And the cow tipping, now that's a myth, as I know very well having grown up on a dairy farm.  But, if you want a reference, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cow_tipping

My mother is 84.  Her first computer had Win 98SE.  She's been using Win XP for about 2 years now, as I recall, on a older computer given to her.  And, she's talking about getting a new computer.  When she does, it will, of course, have Win 7, and I have no expectation that she'll be asking for a downgrade of her OS.  Of course, she'll have questions about Win 7 but I think we can work through that.  Her transition from Win 98SE to Win XP was not terribly difficult and I don't expect that a transition to Win 7 will be so either.
