Title: router
Post by: harry678 on August 17, 2010, 01:07:32 PM
I have a dell computer and router.  The grey end is usb, fits into the back of the tower then other end which is usb but smaller than normal into router.  I have bought a laptop and asked talk talk to send me a new wireless router which they did.  This only has eternet ports so I bought a usb ethernet 10/100 adapter so the usb end fits into the end the grey usb used to go, then there is a ethernet adapter on the end which goes into the new router.  The desktop says new hardware found and asks me to install disc but then says something like data invalid so I cannot connect like this.  Is there a wireless router I can buy that has a small Usb port so I can still use this grey cable.  please help driving me mad.

Welcome to the computer hope forums harry678.

Your question is very vague and a little confusing. So you have just bought a new laptop with wireless capabilities, you asked you ISP (Internet Service Provider) to provide you with a new wireless modem/router. You bought something similar to this to plug the router into the PC via USB:

However you had problems installing the drivers and/or software so you want to get another router (USB & LAN) so that you can link the two together to connect the PC? This seems a little bizare, there are probably other alternatives but first we need to know a few things and confirm other things.

First and foremost: What computer do you have?
Am I right in assuming that the PC doesn't have an Ethernet port?
Do you still have the USB to LAN adapter? If so what were the steps up to the problem with the software? i.e. installation disc would not autoplay.

thank you for your reply.

I have a dell desktop windows xp.  Quite old about 8 years.

Yes you are right does not have any ethernet ports.

Yes I have usb cable other end to LAN, (looks like usb end but bit smaller).

Whe n i put disc in autoplays then says hasnt passed windows logo then says something like should stop installation but I continue anyway then says data invalid.

This is why I bought a ethernet/usb adapter.  I plug the end of the adapter which is usb into the back of the tower then you hook other end into new router but dell computer does not let me install software (like I have just mentioned) so I cannot connect via cable.  I bought a belkin adapter but when I put this in one of the usb ports it didnt except it says hardware not functioning properly.  Any ideas?

Sorry about my late reply. Sounds like a damaged CD or incompatible installer. If you post up whatever you can about the adapter (brand, model, various numbers printed on the device) then we might be able to find you a driver.

Do you have one or more empty PCI slots inside your computer?  If so, I'd get this: ENCORE ENLGA-1320 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI Ethernet Card 1 x RJ45 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833180026&cm_re=ethernet_pci_card-_-33-180-026-_-Product).  This is what I would have done in the first place. This gives you an Ethernet port so that you connect directly to your router or modem in the normal way, the way anyone with a computer with an Ethernet port would usually do it.
