Title: unknown device in device manager
Post by: selica on September 18, 2010, 03:18:16 PM
Have unknown device in device manager.  Says drivers not installed; when click to install; cannot find softeware.  Recently had hard drive formatted and windows XP reinstalled on compaq computer; with AMD Athlon(tm)64 processor 3500+.  Can I get a download or fix some where?  Also; when I turn computer on; the monitor say analog power saving mode.  Will not come on.  It's a LG 20in. Flatron.

Thanks

1) After installing the OS, did you install the chipset driver? If not, do so now. Make sure all other drivers are also installed (video, audio, etc).

2) Under what heading in device manager is the unknown device listed?

Go to www.support.hp.com
Enter the Compaq model number, download all the drivers for Windows XP.
Didn't the Compaq allow a reinstallation of Windows from the Recovery Partition?

HP computers that ship with Microsoft Windows XP and Compaq Presario Desktop computers made in spring of 2003 and later already come with a hidden preloaded recovery partition. This hidden partition can be used to recover all of the original software in the event of a major problem by pressing the F10  key repeatedly when the computer is first started. However, there might be times when recovery discs are needed to restore the computer, such as when a virus destroys the recovery partition. By using the Recovery CD-DVD Creator program, you can create a set of recovery discs to restore your computer back to its original condition.

1.  Open Device Manager (Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager)
   2. The hardware whose drivers are missing will appear as Unknown device, so it's easier to locate the device.
   3. Right click on the unknown device and click on Properties.
   4. Under the Properties window click on Details tab and select Device Instance Id (or Device Instance Path) from the drop down box.
   5. You should see a code similar to this

      PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27DC&SUBSYS_30868086
      &REV_01\4&1E46F438&0&40F0

   6. The portion of the code highlighted in RED is the Vendor ID and the portion highlighted in GREEN is the Device ID. In this example:

      Vendor ID = 8086
      Device ID = 27DC

   7. Once you have obtained both the IDs, proceed to PCI Database (http://www.pcidatabase.com/). There you can either search for the vendor from the vendor ID or directly get information about the device along with the vendor name by searching with the device ID.

   8. Then from there you can go directly to the hardware manufactureres website and get the driver.
