I have a Gateway Windows Vista Home Premium OEMAct Laptop. I tried to install windows 7 without the cd and when i tried to activate illegally ( i know i should not i tried to get it), it started shutting off on me. Now when i try to login to my user on windows 7 it shuts off right when it logs in. I want a detailed description on how to restore factory setting right at the startup of the computer. Please i really need to get this laptop running... By the way i dont have a system recovery cd..
Thanks in advance.

Try pressing F11 very soon after turning on the computer, before Windows would normally start to load. F11 should, if pressed at the right time, start the recovery partition to run, allowing you to restore the system to its original configuration.
I know the F11 works on my Compaq laptop and I believe it should work on your
Gateway.

Now you know why pirate software is a bad idea.
Try the recovery partition as described here.

If that does not work, order a system restore CD from Gateway. Replacement of the operating system CD may be at a cost according to your warranty status.
