Just want to get an idea of other peoples upload speeds, when you sign up to an internet package you generally only get these specifications: Download speed (in Mb/s) Download limit (not including fair use policy) and... no wait that's it.
My old package was 2Mb/s, I don't recall how reliable the speed was. I used to get an upload speed of 70kB/s.
Now my package is a 20Mb/s, I get between 1.7MB/s & 2MB/s depending on time of day. I now get a staggering 70kB/s upload... What!?

You need to talk to your ISP on two counts. Even though ISPs don't always advertise upload speeds, they should be able to tell you what you should be getting.
Also, if you are paying for a 20Mbs package and only getting 2Mbs there is a definite problem.

The package is sold as 20 megabits per second and I am receiving 20 megabits per second. I just work in bytes that's all (soz confusing).
That is true though I could challenge my ISP for that information provided it is included in the contract.

Thank you, but what is it? A list of what any download rates correspond to upload rates or just one companies rates?

Nvm worked it out. In the UK though that sort information isn't offered up.

What type of service is offered in the UK? 20Mbps download is cable or FIOS, DSL won't go that fast in North America. However, Bell Labs has achieved 300Mbps in testing. http://gigaom.com/2010/04/20/dsl-speed-300-mbps/

I can't imagine any ISP in North America that wouldn't freely give out the up load speeds.
You may get a new CSR that doesn't know, but thy can find out.

This is simply not true. I am on Virginmedia fibre cable in the UK and I have 20 Mbit/sec down and 768 kbit/sec up (soon to be upgraded to 20 Mbit down / 2Mbit up). These figures are widely available. There are plenty of price/speed comparison sites. I don't know why Accessless wrote that. I think maybe he needs to phone up his ISP's help desk. Bear in mind you won't get 20 Mbit from everywhere you download from.

You're confusing couple of things.
Your IPS provides download speed in Megabits per second = Mbps (20Mbps)
Your browser lists down- and upload speed in Kilobytes per second = KB/s
1 KB/s = 8.192 kbps
70KB/s = 573Kbps = 0.573Mbps

My point is though why isn't this information on the providers website? I know I can find them on comparison websites but why not from the people selling me the service? It seems to me that it's just as bad as when the companies stated speeds that they just weren't providing. I will acknowledge however that some business broadband providers state upload rates.
Apparently mine is working up to ~90kB/s (768kb/s) upload, other sites don't seem to receive at that speed.

If you are talking about Virginmedia they have a table of upload and download speeds here. I'm not sure what you are moaning about.

That's nice but how the *censored* did you find that? Even knowing the exact webpage that I was looking for I couldn't find a link to it or uncover it in a search. Not what I would call freely offered information.

1. I think you can write the word "*censored*" on here. It is 2010 and not 1810.

I hate google. If you include the word "internet" or "broadband" in that search, it doesn't come up... >:(

But my point still stands that when they spin you these offers they rarely tell you this up front, you have to know what you're looking for.

It doesn't "prevent" them. It just puts them further down the list of results. If you have Google's default of 10 results to a page you may not even see the ones you want.
If you type in "broadband" and "internet", the search engine doesn't look for pages "relating to" broadband or the internet, it isn't that smart. It looks for pages containing those words. If you want to know about Virginmedia upload and download speeds, typing "Virginmedia upload download speeds" will ensure that pages containing all four of those words are ranked at the top of your results. If you put in other words you are widening the search unnecessarily.
