hi - i replaced the cd-rom drive on my dell pc with an HP cd-writer plus (not sure what model) that i bought used. it reads cd-rw's ok, but the drive spins and the light is on the whole time a cd is in the drive whether i'm actually accessing it or not - is it supposed to do that?
i didn't do anything about the driver since windows me said it didn't need one and the device was working ok

That is not supposed to happen... Lets try working with drivers.. Go to the HP website, and find your drive on the website. try downloading the latest drivers for it... is this Internal or External?

hi - thanks for answering! it's an internal drive, but I don't know what model - it's not listed anywhere on the drive... grr. but it's a 8x/4x/32x drive if that helps. i've also written to the person i bought it from to see if he can tell me what kind it is.

No box? Also, lets try this... Go into My Computer, and right-click on this drive, and click on properties. Next, click on the hardware tab... Does it show any extra information on your drive there?

Check the IDE/ATA flat ribbon cable. It may be improperly connected or damaged.

well, i found out its a Philips CDD4800/45 drive - I haven't had any luck finding a driver, though. The Philips site doesn't have it, and HP couldn't help either... so I guess its hopeless
