Title: Bwaaa Can't re-install steam!
Post by: Nastidon on December 05, 2010, 08:28:50 AM
OK, I was playing a game yesterday using Steam, and my Hard drive decides to go out, I know it is the hard drive because I have had problems with it before. Of course Steam was installed on that drive, I figured it wouldn't be a problem, figuring I can just re-install it on my working drive, but at first I got the message that referenced the old drive I just took out, as if it is trying to re-install it there. After trying numerous things, I am getting the message "The configuration data for this product is corrupt. contact your support personnel." I have no idea how to fix this, maybe one of you do?

Thanks!

The best part about the Steam Client is that they have your games referenced to your acct. So you can clean build your system, reinstall Steam Client clean to this build, connect to Steam and redownload your games or install and reassocate say CS source or Portal etc and go on with your gaming. *The only drawback to the clean install of steam is that some games steam does not save the game status of, so for example if you are almost complete with Portal and your drive is corrupt, you will have to start back at level 1, but Steam will work again. Hopefully you are not looking at critical lost game states. I lost game states before and so I backup my games to a 16gb thumb drive by use of a batch file to grab the *.sav files etc, so that if i lost a drive or a system I can restore back to where I left off.

Have you tried the Steam forum by any chance?  Steam has some of the worst customer support you can find, but there are many helpful members on their forum who may be able to help you better than we can.
