Title: Reasons to Try Linux Mint 10
Post by: Geek-9pm on April 07, 2011, 10:18:15 AM
Just now I have installed Ubuntu 10 and Mint 10 on two of my computers. My personal experience echos what PC world has to say. There are reasons to go with the Mint. I can't say it any better, so let me show you a link to the article published six months ago.

4 Reasons to Give Linux Mint 10 a Try
By Katherine Noyes, PCWorld
... Even before this latest release, in fact, many people have found Linux Mint even easier to use than Ubuntu, thanks in part to a series of graphical tools for enhanced usability. New improvements in "Julia," however, appear to be making Mint even better. ...

This may sound strange. The best reason for me is that it can get my wireless internet with no hassle. I just today got a virus on my Windows XP system. It cut my internet connection. So I used Linux Mint to verify that is was not my router, so that is how I knew it was the virus that did it. I got a copy of MalwareBytes and put it where Windows could get to it. Rebooted, ran the program and, later rebooted and enabled the wireless.
Actually, it infected two windows systems over my Ethernet! (The other was a laptop Vista.)  So havering Linux was vital to the solution. Both Windows PCs now seem to be normal.

And yes, both PCs did have firewall and AV protection.

It seems that the Mall-ware makes seldom attack Linux because it is less popular and there are many flavors out there. My guess is the Microsoft will come up with a solution that use a strategy based non that premise.

Meanwhile, keep a copy of Linux at hand, even if you spend most of your time in Windows. A Dual-Boot install is not easier that ever.

I don't believe that's what you meant to say, is it?  Did you mean "A Dual-Boot install is now easier than ever."

Mint has flash, internet drivers, etc. out of the box, unlike Windows. Any distro of Linux can make a great recovery disc too, imo

Windows comes with a shiteload of network drivers. Not sure *censored* a "internet driver" is (presumably network drivers).

The ones that support being a LiveCD, anyway. Which is a good 90% of them. (Some distros would require you to go to a lot of effort to turn them into a liveCD)

As for Flash:

Did you guys know that Almost every Linux distro is frowned upon by the great RMS? Apparently they aren't free enough. Even Firefox isn't free enough, how DARE they trademark their icon!  ::).

Of course, for people who aren't raging freetards they are great, because you can often actually do things with them- I guess this is a requirement that the FSF forgets people have. But I do ramble!

Another good reason to use Mint now is that Ubuntu is just getting weird. I mean sure GNOME is a cluster.. err, "foogle" but I'd really like to know what they were trying to accomplish with Unity. Also the Mint Menu is rather nice with a search feature much like the windows Vista/7 start menu.
