Title: crashed computer
Post by: dcalthetiger57 on August 22, 2005, 12:09:51 PM
:-[My teenage son has a compaq 6015us that has gone completely useless.whenever you try to start it up it starts off and freezes on a screen that states "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not ............. It gives me five options to go to safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command Prompt, Last Known Good Configuration........., and Start Windows Normally. When I move it to any one of these it freezes up on me. Can anyone please help. I have it set up next to my Dell and will wait for anyone to help me get it going again.

Try booting to the Recovery Console and using - chkdsk /r - and see if it will come back to the desktop.

You can add the command - fixboot - just for good measure, after you run chkdsk.

Check your DELL documentation and see if you can use your DELL CD to boot directly to the Recovery Console.

You may need to change the boot sequence in the Compaq.

Or see if you can borrow an XP CD for this purpose.

tried to use the cd from my dell but it still comes back to the same start up screen. Now I can go into the Compaq Computer Corp Setup Utility where you come up with file-storage-security-advanced columns Is there anything i could possibly change that coul help in here.

I would get his data OFF the drive pronto, and then do a clean install using HIS Compaq disks.

Looks like you did a repair install instead of just using the Recovery Console.

Activation is perfectly normal and must be done within 30 days otherwise you can no longer use your installation of Windows XP.

OK it is activated and the only two problems are no sound and it wont turn off from windows. It restarts again every time. Almost there but still not. I went into the safe mode and went to control panel then i went to system advanced, startup and recovery settings than i unchecked auto restart but it still does it. Any suggestions?

1. no sound and it wont turn off from windows.
2. It restarts again every time.

1. You still need to install soundcard drivers. These can be obtained from the manufacturer's website

2. Is your BIOS properly configured? Do you have an AT or ATX system?

When you normally power down the computer, does it ask you to press the power button or does it do this automatically?

not sure about the bios but it usually shuts down without you having to press the off button. Will be looking for a site with the sound card. Thanks.

So Windows asks you to shut down the system instead of shutting down the PC itself like on modern systems, correct?

Do the following:

1. Right click on your Desktop
2. Properties
3. Screensaver tab
4. Energy button
5. Advanced
6. Energy button section
7. If I press the on/off system of this sytem:
8. Set this to Shutdown.

not exactly what i meant was that whenever you shut it down  from the start icon on the task bar it shows that it is shutting down normally , saving settings etc.......... then the tower lights go off for maybe ahalff second then it starts up again. we are forced to press the button every time.

Make certain your BIOS power settings are configured properly, If you need assistance on how to access or navigate the BIOS see this (http://www.computerhope.com/help/bios.htm) article.
