Enabling automatic updates will notify a user for any recommended fix, patches for your system. Same with your Antivirus. Post the complete error or messages for us to understand what are some updates but not all. You could also manually download MSI from the Microsoft  download sites.

Prepare to install. Creating Restore Point. Succeed 2 Updates. Failed 1 Updates. Error 641. Windows update encountered an unknown error.  (YESTERDAY ALL 3 FAILED.)

AVG say's: Update Failed: General error. It also updates intermittently. Thx

When updates failed such as for MSI 4.0 a complete detail(name of the file) is posted along with the error code. Had this one recently on windows update prompting/notified to install net framework 4(3 files) or KB 2468871 which also failed. Type the KB code on Google search and a Microsoft link for the particular file will be given. Typing KB 2468871 will give you http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2468871  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2468871)
Then just download the installer and manually install it. If there are still problems along the manual install, look for the exact detail error. If you have 1 or 5 files that failed to update, look for the names and KB code. List them and try looking for a manual installation instead. Regarding your AVG antivirus, its either you need to reinstall it and see if next scheduled update will be corrected.

Skip all x64 bit software package download choices and choose the last one x86(e.g. NDP40-KB2533523-x86.exe - http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=27014 (http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=27014))
Check your installed updates and post all files under Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile.
1. Click Start
2. On Search Program and Files search box, type - View Installed Updates - Enter
3. Post all KB code and corresponding file details installed.

From Reply#9 - Those errors or failed to install updates are the very same files/kb codes I was having problem with. However, if you choose the link from More information, it will directly give you the manual download by choosing Download Reliability Update 1 for the Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Now.
Then choose this -> NDP40-KB2533523-x86.exe
After download is complete, install the package and if you are required to reboot, let it do so. Have you tried the Manual installation instead going for the Windows Update? Do this again for the remaining .NET Framework installers. This is how I actually was able to install all 3 files.
Your Reply#10 - Where is that error from? From the Windows update?

That error is from trying to install NDP40-KB2533523-x86.exe. It downloaded fine, but couldn't install. Widows Installer Service could not be accessed.  Am I missing something? Sorry n THANKS

Check your installed updates and post all files under Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile.
1. Click Start
2. On Search Program and Files search box, type - View Installed Updates - Enter
3. Post all KB code and corresponding file details installed.
We need to know first what updates or files were successfully installed. Then will try the manual download/install.
On my Win 7 system, installed updates are the following:
1.) Security update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (KB2539636)  Installed 08/16/2011
2.) Security update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (KB2518870)  Installed 08/16/2011

Check your Windows Installer under Component services. Hit Start->type services.msc, Enter-> look for Windows Installer and check if its disabled. If its disabled, double-click W.I. and change startup type to Manual. Click Apply. Scroll down and check Windows update which should be in Automatic. Do the same procedure as suggested.

Try .Net Framework 3.0 Redistributable Package -> HERE (http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=31) then

.Net Framework SP 1 -> Service Pack 1 (http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=3005)
If these components were successfully installed, then we'll try 3.5 RP and SP.

I don't know what i've done but i get this error: You must use "Turn Windows feature on or off" in the Control Panel to install or configure .Net Framework 3.0.
OK, when i got to turn features on or off, there is NOTHING listed to be turned on or off.

i'm not trying to blame AVG, but this started because of their faulty virus definitions update. BUT, like i said, i'm not blaming them because it's free and i have had good luck for years using AVG. Thx ,,,Again! :)

Navigate to your Programs Files (C:) and look for Reference Assemblies. Is it present? If yes, look for Framework version folders and post them. Under Windows Features, look for Windows Process Activation Service. There is a plus sign for you to expand to turn on/off during the installation. However, we must verify first under the Program folders if there are current version installed under Reference Assemblies.

I agred to terms, then I got an error: The Win Install Service could not be accessed. This can happen if Win Install Serv. is not correctly installed. KB 2539636. Download x86.exe installer 18.0 MB after saving then install. Same result? If it went on another error installation, try Selective Start up.
1. Click Start, type msconfig in the start search box and then press Enter.
2. If you are prompted for an Administrator password or for confirmation, type the password or click Continue.
3. Under Startup Selection, choose Selective Startup and clear the Load Startup Items check box.
4. Click the Services tab, click to select Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
5. Click Ok.
6. When you are prompted, click Restart.
7. Try the Windows Update again.
If same result, install them manually starting with the KB 2539636 security update you previously downloaded but cannot install.

Could you disable AVG and other protection softwares on your PC and try again the downloaded NET Framework files for manual installation. You could do this offline or without internet connection while doing the install, just to be sure when you turn off all protection softwares. Re enable them again later. There is a NET Framework Cleanup Tool available online and is published here  http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx)

So are you saying after i re-do the disabling, I should run the tool from your last link? Thx Jason

Turn off protection softwares then try reinstalling the previously downloaded files for manual installation which were making errors. Do this offline or without internet connection.  The link is about steps as a last resort for any unsuccessful installation of NET Framework. Read the link and it will give you what you might need to resolve the errors. These are the last things I could suggest as I'm out of ideas.

OK, I did all of your listed recommendations. I still get Windows Installer error. I found, and used a .netframe verification tool. I ran it on 2.0 3.0 3.4 n 4.0, it verified everything is fine in .netframe. Can't it just be that I'm missing my Windows Installer Service App? Thx
