computor wont boot up it hangs when it gets to the windows xp logo tried to boot from the dvd drive but it just ignores it so i suspect the dvd drive may be broken and causing the problem. i think i need to disconnect the drive

Do you have any experience servicing laptops? Is it still under a warranty you are trying to void? Have you visited the manufacturer's web site/forum?

Why are you trying to get in there so badly? What has happened to this poor machine?

no it is no longer under warrenty. tried to contact medion but got no reply. dont know what happened to the machine other than it hangs up on the windows xp logo when it boots up. it would not read or acknowledge the dvd drive suspected the dvd to be the problem but now it doesn't look that way

"Safe mode helps you diagnose problems. If a symptom does not reappear when you start in safe mode, you can eliminate the default settings and minimum device drivers as possible causes. If a newly added device or a changed driver is causing problems, you can use safe mode to remove the device or reverse the change."

Go back into safe mode & look around for the problem, check your device manager and event viewer.

Opening a laptop by a novice is ALWAYS the wrong thing to do.  :o :o :o :o

Leave that alone and reinstall Windows after backing up your critical data. Load SP2 before connecting to net. Practice safe computing.

Let us know if this fixes it.

i have put the dvd drive back in and rebooted dvd drive is now working. reinstalled windows Xp and installed SP2. still had same problem when booting up. re: windows hanging on the xp logo but could get past this with another reboot. a couple of times when i pressed the off button a blue screen appeared briefly with a message looked like( DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_EQUAL.
windows had to shut down to protect pc) but it was to quick to get all the message. but it know seems to be working Ok other than that.

Could not find a dip switch to clear the bios so disconnected the battery for about 20 mins. have since booted up and shutdown several times with no problems
