I am writing this on another computer instead of the one that has the problem:
On the computer with the problem typing the number keys e.g. 12345 preduces !@#$% .......
This happens regardless of wheither or not the shift key is pressed.
ALSO, the : ; key and < , keys will produce ONLY the top characters.
-
On a Desktop that means you have to get another keyboard.
On a laptop you can attempt to clean the keyboard. But may be the caps lock key is stuck.
-
Thanks for replying. BUT the problem seems to be in the shift key. Lower case letters are produced REGARDLESS of whether or not the shift key is pressed. Numeric keys produce symbols regardless of whether or not the shift key is pressed.

OK. The shift key is stuck down. Gently remove it and see if you can find the problem. It could be either shift key.
Watch this video. Does it help?

OK. The shift key is stuck down.
that would cause all letters to be caps too...

Thanks, BC
Did he say it is a laptop?
There is a ribbon cable on some laptops that can be broken or loose. It is possible that could be the cause. I saw that in another forum.

Do you write with the AZERTY settings with a QWERTY keyboard?
Ex.:
Q=A
W=Z
Etc.
-
here is a website that explains about the AZERTY keyboard which is the one they use in France. if that is your problem it tells you how to fix it.

hope this helps.

You can buy new laptop keyboards too.

Not sure the question of if this is a laptop was answered. However, if so I see this a lot on Dell's. The number lock button seems to activate on boot causing the blue alternative number pad (see keyboard) to activate. Toggling the number lock off seems to resolve this issue. 8)
