Title: Web Browsers which is best?
Post by: JoetheHawkinsman on January 07, 2012, 01:26:00 PM
I was wondering which web-browser would you recommend, which is safest, fastest, and so forth.

I am sure you will get a variety of answers here.  Internet Explorer most likely at the bottom.  I started with IE because I thought I had to use it. Then  downloaded Firefox some years ago until it lost its usefulness for me and now my default browser  is Google Chrome which I like the best.  FireFox is a backup browser and IE only if I am absolutely desperate.  And there really isn't a limit that I know of on how many browser's you can have so experiment.

Thank you very much I think I'll try out Firefox.

Firefox with Noscript plug-in is the most secure browser you'll find.

And apparently Chrome is the fastest... although I'm not so sure about which one allows the rest of your work to be the least interrupted as all of them seem to slow the rest of my PC down... probably a flash issue though.  I've used Firefox ever since I heard Netscape had been brought back to life and can't say I'm a fan of Chrome as if there's one browser that stops everything else running smoothly it's Chrome.

it doesn't make a damned bit of difference which browser you use. People who get their panties in a twist about which browser is best are lifeless losers with nothing better to do but make exorbinant and factless claims that "Browser X is more secure" or "Browser X is faster". Just use a damned browser and stop with the senseless zealotry.

If what I said is wrong, please articulate how it is. Or you could continue to make quips that imply I use or need drugs, which has no basis in fact and are wholly irrelevant, if that makes you feel important.

I didn't really get upset about it, more like just wanted to warn people that Chrome can make the rest of the applications run worse.  It's got nothing to do with loyalty, if it was I'd use IE, after all I like MS.

General consensus amongst most computer enthusiasts over past few years has been anything but Internet Explorer, that said IE is getting better, im on IE 10 at moment and it was almost 24 hours before i downloaded oprera, normally its less than twenty minutes after i install the OS.

No idea, just makes 'em more choppy, it's an issue I've discovered on multiple machines and is enough to stop me recommending it.  As for speed there's basically no difference between each browser, so go ahead and choose whatever.  I've gotten used to browsing recklessly under NoScript so I'm stuck with Firefox for now.

Well, I think that issue you're having with Chrome is exactly that - your issue. Chrome doesn't affect any other applications on any of the 4 PCs at home.

As already said, the best browser is simply a matter of opinion.

Yah. Until you take into account the plug-ins for Firefox after which it becomes a matter of.. Firefox! That's right.

I'm sorry, Raptor, but Firefox is not the best browser... as it isn't actually a browser...

After all, a browser is designed to display web pages...

And web pages are designed to display in Firefox.

Yes, I do agree that Firefox is the best browser for me. But that's because I design websites, and Firefox is the easiest to work with. Stupid IE6.

Stupid IE6.

Good times... (sarcasm)

So you're admitting that Firefox is the best webbrowser?

I prefer it to any other, and I would recommend it to others too.  But the best?  It depends.  Also, I was joking about earlier.

At this point in time I do believe IE is more secure than FF with Chrome leading the pack. Chrome Is Most Secure of the Top Three Browsers, Study Finds (http://"http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/245856/chrome_is_most_secure_of_the_top_three_browsers_study_finds.html")

Although I'm not giving up FF yet, Chrome is making some major progress with it's speed and security not to mention a growing number of useful add-ons.

So NoScript counts for nothing?  Because for anyone who understands to use it, NoScript makes Firefox without a doubt the most secure browser.

So NoScript counts for nothing?

I never said that.

The user behind the mouse and keyboard make a browser secure. An add-on is just one layer of security and no one layer alone will ever be enough unless you simply never connect to the Internet.

Also, NoScript is not without it's faults:
Attention all NoScript users (http://purplebox.ghostery.com/?p=103180001)
Adblock Plus and (a little) more (http://adblockplus.org/blog/attention-noscript-users)
ALERT: Firefox with NoScript does NOT ALWAYS protect from SWF clipboard hijacks (http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/archive/2008/08/16/1645130.aspx)

In short. NoScript only blocks what does not make the developer money (check your NoScript whitelist). Including other security related add-ons which are not always easy to determine. And it does have vulnerabilities.

Because for anyone who understands to use it, NoScript makes Firefox without a doubt the most secure browser.

Understanding it is the reason I don't use it. For example this very forum. With NoScript set to it's defaults you can not see all of the posting options. There are no Smileys or BBCode formatting options.

With NoScript

Without NoScript

For the record I never was a fan of NoScript. For me it's a PITA and in all my years of visiting shady websites I have not gotten infected unless I was trying to. It's not just blocking scripts, it's blocking content.

I prefer AdBlockPlus and Ghostery. But just like NoScript they have their faults and I have had to whitelist several things in Ghostery in order to see web pages as they should be seen. And by default AdBlockPlus is set to "Allowing acceptable ads in Adblock Plus" (http://adblockplus.org/en/acceptable-ads). I find myself using the Open With add-on (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/open-with/) quite a bit due to knowing that there is content on a web page that I am not seeing.

Judging from what I'm reading, Noscript was too difficult to operate for you. That's not really Noscript's fault.

Yeah, I'm betting Noscript makes tons by whitelisting about:config. Why didn't I think of that?

So you block Javascript and then complain about Javascript not working?

Riiiight.

That does personalize my reply. I didn't say for everyone. I just believe that NoScript is overkill. Simple as that.

Take a look at the default whitelist, it does contain some odd ones...

I must have thrown those out a long time ago. I know there are some entries which are greyed out but you can remove those through about:config from what I recall.

I didn't see anything strange greyed-out though, so it is trivial to remove the entries you don't want.
