Title: Windows 2000 KERNEL.dll error
Post by: Geek-9pm on February 21, 2012, 11:34:34 PM
I installed SP-4. Still get error.
Tried SFC /scannow. Still get error.
Loaded a new version of  KERNEL.dll and still get error.
Some sites say their 'scanner' will fix my problem. Did not try them.

A number of programs give this error.  Video LAN is one.
When I try to install FLASH, it says this:

Forgot to mention. This is for an old  IBM Think pad with Windows 2000 , now upgraded to SP4.

Windows 2000 support is removed in VLC 1.2.0 and newer.

My guess is that Windows 2000 is simply too old to run those programs. It is looking for a certain procedure located in Kernel32.dll which is not even implemented in Windows 2000. You need XP to run that software.

Not all apps that work on XP and later will run on Windows 2000. Sometimes you're lucky, sometimes not.

Check version of VideoLAN. Windows 2000 support is removed in VLC 1.2.0 and newer.

Old versions of VLC for Windows 2000:

Old versions of Flash Player for Windows 2000:

Probably necessary to do the same for other apps. The Oldapps site has lots of stuff.

Thanks for replys
I am about ready ton give it up. All I wanted was to watch movies on the old laptop, the think pad X 20.
Found out that not all drivers were up to date, Even the BIOS was very old. Finally got the audio to work right and tat at least got WMP to play MP3 files.

Installing Flash 9 on a Windows 2000 system is not intuitive. Got a version of the 9 series to work. But You Tube is very slow.

Now trying different versions of VLC.  I am at 1.1.7
AAAGGG... got that message again!

Why is it so difficult to install old versions of anything?

Hello. I had a Compaq Evo N620c with Windows 2000, and Flash worked perfectly. But I got the same problem with my Armada 1700 a time back. Mozilla Firefox and Flash worked back then. This is about three-four months ago.

Thanks, I have given up.

Many websites now require Flash 11.
As far as I know, Adobe has no intention to make Flash compatible with Windows 2000.

Thanks to numerous past discussions, methods have been found for installing Flash Player 11 on Windows 2000. See this thread in Adobe User Forums, which explains how to use the free HxD Hex Editor to make one simple change that will allow installation of Flash Player 11 on Windows 2000:

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1012569

It's preferable to install recent Flash Player 11 using the hack rather than an old version which has security vulnerabilites and may be deprecated by some video sites.

I concur with another poster that VLC 1.0.5 works well on Windows 2000. Have also had good success with SMPlayer which might have some newer codecs.
