Title: Connection not using full potential
Post by: nathanschutte on March 24, 2012, 10:57:29 PM
I just bought a HP desk top.  Pretty top of the line i thought for Walmart.  But I'm not a computer guy really.
I have a p7-1003wb   Can someone please tell me how to utilize the download capabilities to their full extent.  I am trying to down load MW3 and i have a DSL ISP.  I do know that i don't pay for a very fast connection but i have two desk tops and a lap top always ruining oh and two Iphones all using the data and even after i turn all them off exec pt for the new one  i still can't download over 155 or 160 KBs.  So my question how can i tap into that bandwidth?  Is there any way to do this? and If so how much is it going to cost me to be able to do this?  Someone please help me out on this one.

Most likely what's happening is that all the CRAPware (trial software) installed on the system is slowing it down.  OEM computers always ship with a bunch of programs installed that people don't usually use.  All those programs usually run at start up too, so assuming you even make it to the desktop, and one of the programs don't crash the system, its performance, including INTERNET will be bad.  You could have FIOS and it wouldn't do you any good with all the software running on that new computer.

I could go on for a long time on how to optimize the OS for speed and it would take too long, so just google "how to speed up your computer" and you'll get a million hits...

btw...  160 KB download speed for DSL isn't that bad.  It equates to about 1.2 Megabits per sec, and standard DSL only gives 1.5 - 3 megabits per sec, depending on how close you are to the DSLAM

Go to speedtest.net

and post your download speed after a test..

155 or 160 KBs
i I standard DSL speed for download.
For greater speed, you pay more. Sped is related to price.

Exceptions are in some areas where fiber optic is on the street where you live. In that case they can give you all the bandwidth you would  want. But with fiber, the price is determined by other factors. But still very pricy anyway.

We're suppose to get 12 Megabits down and 1 Megabit up on this fiber, ADSL(2+) We pay 25 per month (plus tax and fees) with a 250 Gigabyte cap

I've done a lot of downloading from my Technet subscription and Netflix(ing) and still haven't gone over.  Of course, I can only take so much babysitting of downloading from MS, so I try to spread it out a little  :)

This is a little better, having switched over to N (MIMO) with security disabled (no WPA2)

In a little itty bitty place at the foot of the mountains called Woodlake, CA..

There's no FIOS or Cable Internet provided in this area..  I was going to switch to cable recently but it turns out there's no cable provider that offers cable Internet.
