Title: Default program to open microsoft office documents
Post by: Cheezey on April 08, 2012, 07:03:23 PM
I got my computer with a 60-day trial of Microsoft Office 2010 installed on it. Once the trial ran out, I bought the product, but in doing so installed a separate application, leaving two Microsoft Office installations, one with an unregistered product key and one registered (yes, I know I was stupid). I uninstalled the old version, leaving no default program to open documents with. I tried to track down the EXEs for each program, no dice. When I looked at the start menu shortcuts, I found that each Microsoft Office program lead to one application, called CVH.exe. Setting that as the default program didn't work.

How can I make it so that I can double-click on a pptx or docx file and run the corresponding application?

Welcome!

First, you did nothing stupid. The program should have resolved that issue for you. You may want to complain nto MS about this.

Did you receive a DVD or was it a download?
If the new Office you got is on DVD, install it again after removing both of the other installs. When you um-install Office it does not destroy user documents.

Look in the list of entries in the  'Program Files' directory and see if there is two installations of MS Office. If you ind the right one, send it to the desktop as a shortcut. (Right Click) That will put a good shortcut on the desktop.

Also, go into the place where you  can remove programs. See if two versions of MS Office are installed. Remove the bad one.

You don't need to uninstall the registered version, just the trial version.

Microsoft has a very detailed explanation on how to fix this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2464297

Since you've already removed the trial version, the explanation in "Method 1" should get your sorted without having to reinstall anything or mess about much.
