Title: Saved Password in Chrome
Post by: caps lock1 on May 17, 2012, 05:28:40 PM
Win 7.
I want to do backup to all my Chrome preference before formating the system.
So i copied the folder of my User.
After the format i copied the folder to the right location and all of my history and cookie are in it.
Even my saved password.
When I'm log in to my gmail account i don't need to type the password at all, which is good but..
The problem is that when i go to "managed safe password" and than under "Saved Password" i press "show" I've got nothing!

It seems like the password is definitely "in" the browsers somewhere but i can't "see" it!

How can i Extract my password?

Thank y all!

I do not have a quick answer to your question.

Myself, I have given up on Chrome. I don't like browsers that are either non-intuitive or have flowed documentation. I can not even set Google as my home page in Chrome. I have spent twenty minutes on something that I can find in 20 seconds i in either IE or FF.

I like the password manage in FF.

BTW: Another unhappy Chrome user just checked in.

To sync your data in case a new chrome install is required, I suggest you log into a google account you have.  Go to the personal stuff section in the settings/options page of chrome to do it.

In that case, you can restore sanity to your browser in less than the time it takes to get away from it.

2x3i5x: Are y saying that even if i wasn't do the Sync before the format i can still get to "show" my Password?

Because this is my case..

That tutorial seems to be for an older version. It's slightly different for the latest version of Chrome:

I never use Firefox or Chrome to save my passwords though, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else, especially if you share your computer with other people. Anyone who gets on the computer can easily open and view any saved password you have. I let Kaspersky Password Manager handle my passwords, since it doesn't come with this sort of massive flaw. It encrypts the password database and doesn't allow viewing without the master password. You can buy KPM by itself (unending license), or as part of Kaspersky Pure (Internet security package, 1 year renewable license).

http://www.kaspersky.com/kaspersky-password-manager

There are other password managers out there, most of them just as good.

Cookies also hold login information. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/chrome_cookies_view.html

Although extracting information from them will be an uphill battle.

Actually, after a little research, even IE9 has this problem. While you can view them directly in IE9, there are third party programs that will find and display them.

It's really shocking that Mozilla, Google, and Microsoft would make it so easy...

quaxo,  OK. I believe this.
But did you know that if you are using Mac OS X and FireFox you may come into a very similar situation.
That was a few years back. Don't know if it has improved.

It's specific to each browser, so I expect it is still the same unless they've changed the way Firefox stores passwords on a Mac.

I've been using Opera for months now and it does not have any screen that shows passwords. It does have a screen which lists the websites for which passwords have been saved but no option to show the password.  From that screen, website accounts can be deleted.  Then, the user would need to save the password again the next time they signed in to a website for which the password account had been deleted.

IE9 does display them either, but there is a work around if you know how (I won't post it here). There are also third party programs that will show them to you.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but after some research, it seems Opera has the same flaw as IE9. There is a workaround as well as third party programs that will display the passwords.

You used to be able to with Opera Wand but it is a feature no longer available.

But... View the passwords stored by Opera Web browser with OperaPassView (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/opera_password_recovery.html)
