Title: How does google know where I am
Post by: geoffl on October 14, 2012, 07:34:41 PM
Hi,
I have just arrived in Washing DC from Australia. Google is asking me to enter a valid Australian zip code. I have changed language and region settings in control panel. What else do I have to do?
Regards
Geoffl

What specific problem do you have in relation to changing your current location? Is it the search filter result, domain, google account and have you seen this? (http://support.google.com/websearch/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=179386&ctx=cb&src=cb&cbid=-txxys9715icd&cbrank=3)

I have used Internet options to delete cookies. Is there somewhere I should look?

When in USA...
Google for Australia is:  www.google.com.au
Google for USA is:  www.google.com

Thanks for that. I changed to google.com and my location changed to Washington. Why If my computer is told it is in the US does google.com.au come up?

I'm guessing that google.com.au was set as a default at some point. I don't even know why Google would ask for a zip code (except shopping?), and I've never seen that happen before.

ISP's in different countries have different DNS server locations.
