I have been given a new Netgear cable modem (supplied by Virgin I think). Could I use it as a LAN hub? It has an RJ45 connector labelled 'internet' and four outputs.

You can try it if the settings would be ISP modem - Router - Netgear modem /router or ISP modem/router to Netgear modem/router. http://www.wikihow.com/Connect-One-Router-to-Another-to-Expand-a-Network

Jason,
Yes, that would be the plan. Thanks

If this is a Virginmedia UK "Superhub" then these are indeed made by Netgear but with custom Virgin firmware. There may be a difficulty because the ones supplied to Virgin customers in connection with a cable internet contract remain Virgin property and it is not legally open to the customer to give the equipment away or sell it. Upon cessation of a contract the device should be returned and you may not have the legal right to use it. It would be interesting to know how it was acquired.
