Title: XP Security Plus 2013 Virus
Post by: artbuc on January 14, 2013, 06:49:37 AM
Just got it. Many links showing what to do but I am coming here where I know I will get good info. This virus will not let me open my IE8 browser or run Malwarebytes. Looks like it has disabled my MS Essentials anti-virus program too. I uninstalled Malwarebytes thinking I could reinstall and run it but the virus is blocking Internet access. please help. Thanks.

You seem to be on the internet now. Just download the required apps on the computer you are currently using, copy them via a removable medium (usb drive, cd, floppy, whatever) and copy them to the system in question.

I am using an Ipad. I was able to boot-up in SafeMode Networking and download Malwarebytes. I am scanning now. The link I found said Spyhunter worked best against this virus, but I could not download it. I got a message that said my Administrator settings prevented the download.

Ok. Ran MalwareBytes and  removed bad stuff. Everything ok except could not set automatic updates for MS Essentials - error code 0x80070424. MS Fixit Wizard didn't work. MS info not very helpful. Found this link and it worked:

http://www.techiecorner.com/112/error-number-0x80070424-in-windows-update-solution/

» Click on Start -> Run
» and paste the command below and enter

%SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\WUAUENG.DLL

This line use to reregistering WUAUENG.DLL in window.

» You are done! Launch your windows update again, you should be able to perform update now.

This may be a question for a different subforum, but did I cause any other problems by running the command in the above link?

No, your computer should be ok. Are you having any other problems?

Thanks for responding SuperDave. Everything seems to be fine. For a novice like me, these things can be overwhelming. There are pages of links telling you how to get rid of this virus but many are selling software and everyone offers a different solution. How do you know what to do? The method I used seemed to be ok because several folks said it worked great but how do you know these folks are legit and not shills? That is why I always come here because I know I can rely on the advice.

Over three years of training help me do the cleaning. Most links that offer help to remove a particular infection are just trying to sell their products especially if it says "free download". Some are there just to download more malware. Going to a reputable site for help is your best choice.
