Title: Certain pages display only text, astronomical load times
Post by: WyoChuck on May 08, 2013, 04:43:10 PM
My problem essentially is this, when I go to certain pages such as facebook and espn instead of the page's usual layout with pictures and what naught I get a vertical column of text of material the site should be displaying much like in the dial-up days when you stopped a page before it was fully downloaded.

My problem isn't a connection issue though as several other sites (such as computerhope) work perfectly fine and I was actually able to log in to my University computer through a remote lab system and double check that the problems are not on the server side but for some reason on my laptop.

To remedy the situation I've tried clearing my cache/internet history, deleting unnecessary files, trying different browsers (Chrome, IE10 and FireFox) and re-installing plugins and browsers and creating a new user account on my laptop in the event that mine had somehow become corrupted.  None of these helped however.

If anyone has any suggestions how to fix this or how this problem occurred I'd be greatly appreciative.  My computer was working perfectly fine before lunch but suddenly began having problems I haven't been able to fix.

Also it appears that my roommates computer began having similar issues as mine about the same time so I also tried to bypass our router altogether and plug my computer directly into the modem.  There was no change, could our ISP be causing the problem?

That might also imply you both got a bad bit of spyware. You may want to go over to  the virus forum and post your question there.

I agree with Geek-9PM that it could be malware causing the issues. But have a few questions.

#1 - Do you both plug USB devices into both computers in which something could have travelled via the USB drive between both systems?

#2 - Did you both download and install anything that was the same recently?

#3 - Do you have any shares to each others computer on the local network to where one infected machine could have infected the other through passthrough network authentication, such as a music share between the 2 systems?

#4 - If you think its the ISP, you could eliminate this by contacting someone else who also has that same ISP and ask them to check out facebook and espn and tell you if they are having same issue?

#5 - Do you have an antivirus installed on any of these computers and have you run full system scans and did it report any issues? Also which version of antivirus are you using? *If you dont have an antivirus installed, I'd suggest Microsoft Security Essentials as a good free one which can be downloaded and installed from the microsoft website. It has caught some issues on my wifes computer and my system has been clean ever since installing it a few years ago when it became available, and I left from AVG Free to MSSE which is also Free.
