Ok win 98 can't read my cd drive but when I am in dos it can. It is telling me that my drive c is running in MS dos mode as windows 98 couldn't find real mode When I try to install new hardware it prompts for my win98 cd but when I put it in whatever files can't be found to copy because it can't read my drive so.... Can anyone help me?
My cd drives can't be found in device manager and it says that there is no problem with any hardware. I am running win98 on a Intel. I had xp on this before I screwed up on password so when I fdisk, formatted and started a new install with win98. Before all this happened I had cd writer 128 and sound onboard and sound card but now no sound or drive d. Please could any one help me out here!

What is the drive size and layout (partitioning)? What happened that you installed Win98? Did you FDISK and format the drive first? Did you do anything to the hardware like change jumpers on the drive, or monkey around inside the case? What make/model of PC or motherboard, aliong with RAM, etc. The more details on what happened and what we are working on, the better the outcome.

Looks like you need to start again really if you want to use XP and do a re-partition, FULL format and clean install.

Have you checked the drive manufacturers site for Win98 drivers ? ?

I am not planning on using xp as I don't have a legal copy of one. That is why I went 98 and I must be honest YES I did monkey around inside with the cable wires to make sure that they were secure. I only have 96 MB of ram Intel corp. PD440.....motherboard Pentium 11 processor (it is old that is why someone gave it to me)but it did have winxp plus windows office 2000, FrontPage, etc.
I turned it on this morning and because it wasn't turned off properly I got the message "data error while reading FAT entry for cluster 4294901760 prevents scandisk from fixing drive I try getting in safemode and this comes up "fatal exception OE 015F 0000000015
reboots and then I get INVALID LONG FILENAME unable to fix It tells me to run windows scan but I can't get in now. I try normal mode and get 0E 015F 00000009 and the other one is 015F BFF72170 If noone can help thenI will start alljover again! Thank-you

Well I think 98 is a fine fit for that machine for a variety of reasons. I hope we canhelp you get it working great.
But you are not sure if it was fine to begin with? Is that why is was given away perhaps?

What caused the bad shutdown?
Have you run the drive manufacturer's diagnostic bootdiskette over the drive and run MemTest86 overnight to see if there are any memory errors?
This hard drive of yours is getting a bit old and might be on its way out. My last drive broke down after four years.
Or maybe the controllers are going.
If you use a '98 bootdisk and enable CD-ROM support will the drive read a CD?
Or maybe it is just time for a newer laptop with XP ?

The machine worked great before I screwed around with the administrators password not allowing me to get in. That is why I had to start all over again. When I installed windows xp not my disk the machine really screwed up after my 30 days was up (activation with xp) So that is why 98 is in there. AND yes if I boot with a 98 with cd rom support the drive can be read. That is why I know my cables are put on right. I went to the site about MS dos compatibility Mode on hard disks that Mac had suggested and I am going to study that awhile. I need all the help I can and I do not give up. I will get that sucker going!!! Memory test 86? Where do I get that?
