iTunes has a store as well as can convert to some formats for free with MP3 being most popular format. It can also convert already existing CD's to MP3 for you and build them into libraries to dock devices with such as iPods etc. ( * Unfortunately this is an apple product, BUT!!! it is not locked down to only supporting iPods etc, I have used this for creating MP3's for my daughters small MP3 player that holds 4GB of music and cost $12 at newegg and recharges off of USB port )

FormatFactory is a free utility that handles a vast variety of audio and video format conversions. I use it mostly to convert my DVD movies that I own to digital format for my Sony Walkman MP3/WMV player when I travel and want to watch a movie or TV series that I own a season of on my modern walkman to pass the time.

As far as legal and free music. I have downloaded some MP3's from new artists that are trying to make it and are posting their work for promotional purposes at soundcloud. Some of it is good, and some of it is a work in progress or may always be a work in progress because of poor recording methods or other weaknesses, however there is some good content there and creative artists that offer their music for free download to get noticed. So vs just listening to whatever a record company gave their seal of approval on, you can hear some great garage bands or other artists that create some creative songs. The music is also from around the world and some of which they offer 30 sec audio clips and you can pay to download the whole song or full album. At SoundCloud I also rate and offer suggestions to artists/bands who post their work, and many people will post comments throughout the audio track on how it can be improved or "why aren't you guys already signed up with a record deal?" The artists take the feedback and will communicate back with you and take your suggestions and make the songs better or decide to leave it the way that it is because its like art. In that it is art, it is the artists creation and not subject to change to someone elses feature preferences. I found SoundCloud through Facebook where one of my friends suggested I check it out.

I might know of people who do it. But I don't believe we can help you with that here since that would violate forum rules.

Personally I like iPods (like an iPod Nano or iPod Touch) as a music player. The Nano is more your basic MP3 player and the iPod Touch is that plus it can run most of the apps an iPhone can, and you could use Spotify or Grooveshark (works, but not perfectly, you have to manually change songs) on it to play music as well as YouTube and games etc. The Nano would cost just over $100 and the Touch near $200. Both use iTunes to put music on the device as well as can rip music from CDs. Also iTunes is one of the best places to buy music.

I would only download music if it has a store to process the transaction to buy the songs for say 99 cents each etc or full albums for like $8.99 etc USD and would retain all documentation of the purchase to prove legal right to own a copy of it. I am not familiar with those, other than this one clients son was using grooveshark and I think its the same as Limewire which is the grey area of music sharing. Grey = That is there is a mixture of legal and illegal downloads and even paying a small fee for membership does not make you immune to legal action against you for downloading what has not been approved for download etc.

I personally stay as far away from any music downloading sites as possible, mainly out of the fact that if I dont go there, then I cant get into trouble by say accidentally downloading something that appears as ok and later finding out that its not ok and illegal. Here in the USA, the law does not protect the dumb or those who assume legalities and are wrong! You cant claim I didnt know and sorry I wont do it again and just walk away. If your targeted for illegal activities your guilty until proven innocent! And fines and penalties are astronomical for those who have been tried for illegal downloads and ruined their lives paying fines equaling the cost of a house or more.

All the music I need these days I will either listen to streaming for free off of youtube with the youtube video window minimized or if I want it for listening to. And if it is so good that I need a copy of it to listen to outside of this youtube stream, I will go on amazon, ebay, or visit wal-mart and buy the actual CD and then when I get it I will use iTunes to create a MP3 copy of it so it can play on a MP3 player.

I have tons of music CD's and believe that if you want the music and want to stay out of trouble its best to have the CD in hand to prove that its yours to listen to etc. Same goes for my DVD movies that I converted to digital to play on my walkman when I travel. I own the physical copy of all movies that are digital so nothing illegal to worry about.

As far as the only downloaded music I have ever gotten other than from soundcloud promotion MP3's, Coke Rewards had some downloads as well as other food products where you enter a code and it allowed you to either cash in points or enter a 1 time use code from inside of a cereal box for a MP3 download of a single song that the manufacturer of the product paid the artist and record company for the ability to give you the customer the ability to have a MP3 of that song etc.

* Basically if you want to discuss download of music through shady sites, you are best not to ask about it here as for the Computer Hope Server & Site is based in USA and while members are from around the world, many also are in areas such as the USA where there are laws against aiding to piracy!

Lastly .... There are no sites that I know of that are 100% legit = legal that offer unlimited downloads. All the ones that offer unlimited downloads of music for even a monthly fee have legal problems that will be passed to you, especially if your in the USA or another country that abides by piracy laws. Most of these sites that are offering this service are dodging the law by hosting the music for download in countries that do not have anti-piracy laws or very lax laws.

lol.... egghead ;D

If your looking to download music legally you can use
http://www.youtube-mp3.org/
all you have to do is go to the music video or any other video on youtube and put the link in the bar on the website. It will convert the video to mp3 and all you will have to do is download it and transfer it to the mp3.

However it is not good for downloading whole albums etc... only 1 song at a time.

Hey Rookie whole albums or music ripped off of youtube to my understanding is still illegal  ::)  Its ok to listen to it streaming off of youtube and when youtubes content cops snuff out the full albums etc they are gone and there is no pirated ownership involved, but using a tool to basically bootleg is still illegal because it is still illegal posession of what is not yours to have physical digital ownership of. This is essentially the same as going to a movie theater with a digital video recorder to have a copy of the content. The movie theater being similar to a youtube stream where its viewed only for as long as its ok to view it, and when its no longer ok to view it its gone. Same thing goes for youtube and audio!!!

Basically while it is streamable to all its public domain, but when you bootleg it it is no longer bound to those rules!

Still illegal!  ::)

I'm a big fan of Amazon's MP3 service - It tends to be cheaper than iTunes and doesn't need any sort of software to be installed (good since I use Linux), once you have paid you can just download the .mp3 file directly to your computer.

Its not illegal, the music/video's have been posted to youtube for the public. The site doesn't violate youtube's terms of service, although its been dinged for storing mp3 files previously downloaded to its servers, its still legal.

I can just recommend the Apple Ipod nano.
Good quality in everything.
Normally I'm not an Apple fan, the Ipod is the only product I have.

Why dont you just get the music from cds, or haven't you got many cds at home?
(Or borrow cds and use "copy them", I don't whether it's legal, but it should be when the owner has agreed.)
I did not do this because we have got enough cds at home.

Nope, it is still illegal as you are not paying royalties when you listen to the downloaded MP3, when you listen to it on Youtube the advertising will pay for it.  Believe what you want but do not advise this (illegal) practice here.
