Title: Cant open saved Office documents
Post by: rcpeoples on February 11, 2014, 02:37:19 AM
All of a sudden, I cannot open ANY Microsoft Office documents that I have saved on my computer. Even if I create a new document, save it, and close it, I am not able to open it a minute later. A dialog box comes up that says, "Publisher (or Word, etc) cannot find the file you specified. The next dialog box will let you browse to locate the file on your hard drive or floppy disk." I tried repairing and re-installing Office, but that didn't work. I have had these files saved on my desktop for months and haven't had any problems opening them until now. Also, I was reading about error codes with this subject. I'm not sure if it helps, but the dialog box has the error code 1100174. Thanks in advance for any help with this!

So, you still have Word files saved on your desktop, right?  If you double click on them, do they open in Word?

Yes, Word opens. Then the dialog box pops up with the error message, but my document doesn't open.

Do you also have some Word files in your Documents folder?  Can you open them?

Do you use Excel?  Can you open Excel files?

Did you make any software changes to your computer just before this problem started?  What protection apps (anti-virus, anti-malware) do you use?

In Word this will happen if the file path is way too long...
Not sayin it's the issue here...but certainly worth takin a look at.
