Hello,
I am working on getting things back to normal on a Windows 8 Surface for my client. It seems as though we are infected with a some malware that redirects the Chrome browser when a link is clicked on frequently visited sites. It has actually done it with Computer Hope Forum, too! Usually, we have to click the link about 3 times before it functions normally. I don't really think it matters what sites pop up but just in case, c.2.adprotect, laundry.reviewed.com, tivoli and jct.mappings.net are some of the sites that consistently pop up.
I am having trouble following the instructions on the "Read this before requesting malware removal help" page because I believe some of the applications have updated since the article was written and therefore the steps are a bit different. I would like to do the right thing and not guess how to do it correctly. Could someone please advise me?
AdwCleaner was a tad different, but I figured it out. Still, someone probably needs to update the notes in these very important instructions for seekers to do first before requesting malware removal help!
So far, I've run an AdwCleaner scan and I think I did the Malwarebytes scan correctly, but I've attached a screenshot of where I'm at. I would love to know how to best proceed.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.

7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

- Be sure to print out and follow the instructions provided on that same page for performing a scan.
- Caution: This is a beta version so also read the disclaimer and back up (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971759) all your data before using.
- When the scan completes, click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats found and reboot the computer if prompted to do so.
- Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
- If there are problems with Internet access, Windows Update, Windows Firewall or other system issues, run the fixdamage tool located in the folder Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit was run from and reboot your computer.
- Two files (mbar-log-YYYY-MM-DD, system-log.txt) will be created and saved within that same folder.

Hi Dave,
I guess MBAM doesn't give scan logs anymore? At any rate, I ran the scan again and quarantined everything.
From the look of these logs, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong. I will test the browser and see if it does anything suspicious.
BTW, we did go into the Add Remove Programs and tried to uninstall anything that seemed fishy way back before I started with the Forum.

Here are the scan logs from ESET. For the most part, the redirects seem to have stopped. I have not noticed any pop ups, so, could it be possible this is the extent of my problems...?

I also have the same issues on a Dell Laptop running Windows 7. Just so you know I am not starting multiple threads on this same computer, I thought I'd start a new log for a separate system.

Ok, we'll do some clean up and I'll look at the other thread.
This step will remove all cleaning tools we used, it'll reset restore points (so you won't get reinfected by accidentally using some older restore point) and it'll make some other minor adjustments...
This is a very crucial step so make sure you don't skip it.
Download DelFix by Xplode (http://general-changelog-team.fr/fr/downloads/finish/20-outils-de-xplode/9-delfix) to your desktop. Delfix will delete all the used tools and logfiles.
Double-click Delfix.exe to start the tool.
Make sure the following items are checked:
- Activate UAC (optional; some users prefer to keep it off)
- Remove disinfection tools
- Create Registry backup
- Purge System Restore Points
- Re-set system settings
Now click "Run" and wait patiently.
Once finished a logfile will be created. You don't have to attach it to your next reply.

This runs the Disk Cleanup utility along with other selections if you have chosen any. (if you had a lot System Restore points, you will see a significant change in the free space in C drive)

also, how will it affect the System Restore Points?
Now I'm wondering about setting a new system restore point. Did this last downloaded program do that already?
When looking further in the Disk Cleanup window, I see that we can 'clean up' System restore.
From what I remember, the only restore point is actually set to just a week ago. Should I try to look in to this further? My clients were wondering. Also, is it possible to set a restore point to earlier than what is already set?

I usually clean everything with no ill effects. It won't touch the Restore Points unless you click on "More Options" to remove your Restore Points.

Delfix is supposed to create a new Restore Point.

We usually set a new Restore Point after cleaning because a lot of malware is installed in the Restore Points and, everytime you do a System Restore, your get infected again. Restore Points are created at the time that you create the Restore Point.
