Title: Flash drive (removable storage disk)
Post by: halibut4 on November 13, 2005, 12:58:15 AM
??? I recently purchased my first USB "Flash Drive" (Removable Disk) and have been using it to store digital photos. Everything was going smoothly for a couple of weeks, until tonight. It is a "MICRO 2.0" 256mb , Actual storage capacity is 247mb with 11.8mb used and 236 mb free.  At this point it started refusing to accept any new photo's. It tells me  "This Directory of Drive G is full. Select a new directory or use a different disk" . What exactly is a  "Directory" and how do I access a NEW one within this unit (removable disk or Flash Drive) Thanks for any help

Format it.

halibut4,

- your flashdrive may be full.  If so, you will have to remove/transfer at least some or all of your photos to another storage device (computer hard drive) in order to add new photos.  You can also delete pics or reformat the drive but will lose any saved pics in the flashdrive.

- another option would be to get another flashdrive.

Halibut:

Directory = The storage area of the flash drive where all the folders are kept.

Since the flash drive is formatted with FAT, you may have no more than 255 files and folders in the directory (but you may have many more files and folders inside folders you create).  If there is still more than enough space on the flash drive, try creating folders and moving some of the files into the folders.

Let us know how it goes,
Doc

Doc,

- good advice!  I missed the fact that the drive shows lots of space available.

Halibut,

- disregard my advice about transferring files/folders.  Although this would solve problems with too many files, it would be very wasteful and unnecessary with so much space available.

Thanks Dell!

However, your advice about moving folders is still good, as Halibut may be wrong about the MB left on the flash drive or may have a lot of photos on her digital camera that she is trying to move to it.

I was just trying to cover another possibility.

Format it.

So far, this has been the most sound advise.

Before you start discussing someone's problem, do remember that it might be a hit 'n run post.

If the poster returns, you can go into detail. The chances of someone  else reading this and finding it helpful are as slim to none.

Unless you enjoy wasting time on people who might possibly not deserve it.  :)

Hi folks! I posted late last night , went to sleep and just got up! Thanks a lot for the responses.  Yes there is lots of space left on the flash drive (236mb) When I go to MY COMPUTER and highlite REMOVABLE DISK, it shows that 11.8 mb have been used & 236mb are still available! When I try to save a new photo, it tells me, "This directory of drive G: is full. Choose a new directory or disk".  Apparently, the items stored need to be divided among a number fo directories ( folders? ) instead of as a single group within the disk.  Once again, Where do I go to choose ( or create ) a new directory? Thanks Again! Ron

FAT formatting only allows 255 (2^8 - 1, for purposes of allocating the most space possible to data and not formatting) files and folders per folder.... In other words, to store more data on your flash drive, you just need to make a new folder within your drive and move some files in there...  With Windows, in order to do this, you right click -> new -> folder.  If it doesn't allow you to make a folder, transfer 1 file out of your flashdrive and into your computer, and then try making the folder agian.  Once you make the folder, try putting the new file into your new folder, and hopefully it should work.  Keep us updated with your situation!

And amen, pcdoc4christ, God does indeed spend much time on us regardless of how much faith we put in him =]

Hi, Thanks to rs8389 for the solution to my problem! Thanks also to everone who gave of their time and expertise to try to help. I did have to transfer some out to make room for the first new folder, after that it was easy! Thanks again!
