Title: Windows Update won't load through start screen (please help)
Post by: AlwaysScrewed on August 02, 2016, 01:25:40 PM
Well... it didn't take long for me to have issues again. Why does this always happen to me?  :'(

Anyway...

After I used CCleaner yesterday to clean up my Windows 10 computer which I do every week (I DID NOT use the Registry one) I started having issues. I couldn't get it to shut down so I had to force shut it down.

When I started it up again I noticed that when I search for 'update' in the search box down next to the start button and I try to click on 'Check for updates' and 'Windows Update Settings' nothing happens. Nothing loads.

I was able to get into Windows update through the regular Settings app though.

This is disconcerting. As far as I know, I have no viruses and this was not occurring when I started the computer after I got home from work. I would prefer not to reset to factory settings either.

I used CCleaner in a similar manner last week and this did not occur. From what I can tell, it is still checking for Windows Update and there are no other issues but this is still a disconcerting issue and I want it to work through the Search.

If someone could help me fix this issue I would really appreciate it. Please help me ASAP.

Thank you

You need to do a few cold boots to get rid of the interrupted update hang...then go ahead and run manual updates.

Um... what? That made no sense. Can you do a more thorough explanation of what I have to do?

So... an update showed up today. After I installed it... it started working normally again.

I should be happy. Which I am.

However... I can't seem to turn off Windows Defender even though I already have Avast.

Help? I know this is completely different from what I posted about but I like Avast and I don't want Windows Defender.

I'd really appreciate any help with this. Thank you.

See Here... (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/15788/how-to-uninstall-disable-and-remove-windows-defender.-also-how-turn-it-off/)

But that only turns if off temporarily right? How do I turn it off permanently?

Also... for some reason... my Avast was saying the shields were on but Windows was claiming it was off. I somehow fixed this by simply turning Avast shields off then turning them on again.

One second question. How can I prevent this from happening again? Because I really don't want it to happen again.

Are there specific custom settings I have to use for CCleaner for Windows 10? If so, what are they?

I just really need help/advice on preventing this from happening again...

Thanks for the help and I'd appreciate any help with this as well. Thanks again.

It's because Avast and Defender are butting heads...And if you sy its only temporarily you didn't read the whole link...

Hopefully what I did fixed it.

But I still would like to know how to prevent this issue from occurring again.

Am I supposed to be using specific settings for CCleaner for a Windows 10 computer?

Or maybe I can just not use CCleaner at all or only every so often instead of once a week?

Just not sure how to prevent this from happening again...

See above...Avast and Defender were butting heads...CCleaner has nothin to do with it.

A number of CCleaner "Cleaning" Options make Windows 10 unbootable, cause all store apps to fail to function, and various other issues. Best to not use it at all on Windows 10. Use the built-in Disk Cleanup instead.

Hmm... so you're saying that was the likely cause of Windows update not loading through the Search bar next to the start button?

I didn't know Disc Cleanup was on Windows 10. I assumed it wasn't because it's not on Windows 8.1.

I'm guessing if I search 'Disk Cleanup' in the search bar I'll find it?

Disk Cleanup can be started several ways.  One is to type Disk Cleanup in the Windows search box (the box that says "Ask me anything"), located just to the right of the Windows icon at the left end of your taskbar.  You should see what is shown in the attached photo.  If you right click on Disk Cleanup in that panel, you have Pin to Start and Pin to Taskbar options, which you might want to apply.

Okay thanks. I'll try using it next Monday and I'll probably make a System Restore point before using it just to be safe because I seriously don't want to take any chances and don't want this issue to occur again.
