For the last 2 days my computer has been running exceedingly slow, and I think it's because I just have so much running at the same time, but I can't figure out how to turn them off, or which ones need to stay running? I've deleted unused software etc, I'm just lost, and the computer is so slow even my screensaver is running in stop motion! Help??
-
when did you last check your Virus/Spyware scanners? Have you even got any...?
Have you got lots of unwantef junk on there. And when was the last time you defraged and cleared up your machine...?
-
I'm running a virus scan now, but it's a slow process, like everything else. I defragged Saturday.
-
Any Spyware checks done too? Spyware can really slow your machine down too...
-
I don't have a spyware scan. Can you suggest one I can download (preferably for free, tis the season to be in debt, after all) :)

Ad-Adware, Can be found ...Here (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=lst-0-2)

Thanks so much, I've downloaded it and am running it now.
-
OK, I got rid of 3 families of spyware and I have no viruses, but it didn't solve my problem. Any other ideas?

Well, i poked around, and saw sometihng that was:
Start -> Run -> msconfig
In the startup menu, disable anything without a file path, or anything you know you dont need.
You need to be an administator to access the msconfig.
-
I've tried that, as that's how it worked on Windows 98. I am the admin, but it says "cannot find file" when I try to get to msconfig.
-
Also, I have downloaded Mike Lin's Startup control Panel, but it isn't doing anything.
-
msconfig did not ship in Win2000.
Check in Control Panel for your installation of Startup CPL...
-
Oh, Yeh..Sorry, Forgot that you were on Win2k. :-/
Never heard of Mike Lin's Startup Panel. and yeh, doing what Patio said would be best...
-
You can download msconfig from the net.
-
I just noticed this has only been happening for 2 days.
Take no prisoners. ;)
