Title: Too many processes on Windows 2000 Pro
Post by: Mary Burch on December 14, 2005, 08:08:57 AM
For the last 2 days my computer has been running exceedingly slow, and I think it's because I just have so much running at the same time, but I can't figure out how to turn them off, or which ones need to stay running?  I've deleted unused software etc, I'm just lost, and the computer is so slow even my screensaver is running in stop motion!  Help??

Have you got lots of unwantef junk on there. And when was the last time you defraged and cleared up your machine...?

I'm running a virus scan now, but it's a slow process, like everything else.  I defragged Saturday.

Any Spyware checks done too? Spyware can really slow your machine down too...

OK, I got rid of 3 families of spyware and I have no viruses, but it didn't solve my problem.  Any other ideas?

Well, i poked around, and saw sometihng that was:

Start -> Run -> msconfig
In the startup menu, disable anything without a file path, or anything you know you dont need.

You need to be an administator to access the msconfig.

I've tried that, as that's how it worked on Windows 98.  I am the admin, but it says "cannot find file" when I try to get to msconfig.

Also, I have downloaded Mike Lin's Startup control Panel, but it isn't doing anything.

msconfig did not ship in Win2000.
Check in Control Panel for your installation of Startup CPL...
