Title: Possible rootkit? Slow internet, incomplete downloading, can't install programs
Post by: idunnoagoodusername on November 14, 2017, 08:46:23 PM
Windows 7 Home Premium
HP Pavilion

So my tech vocab isn't all that great, but I'll try to be clear. I have had 2 desktops. I used the first just fine for quite a while, but switched to the second one because it had better specs. On that computer, it was also working fine for quite a while, but one day everything got slowed down drastically. Web pages would still load, but take a while. If I downloaded anything, it would always stop at a random percentage (13% done, or even say 0 out of 0 bytes forever) but never finish. If I tried to download any program, it just wouldn't download/install; the progress bar, like when downloading, goes to a certain percent and then stops forever. I gave up and tried the quickNuke option using Dan's Nuke and Boot. The new windows was the same as the old one, slow internet, incomplete downloads, uninstallable programs.

Because of this problem I switched back to my first desktop, the HP Pavilion. It worked fine! But today the same problem has occurred, however now I can actually install stuff. I got Malwarebytes and HitmanPro to do a scan; my computer was heavily infected, even though I monitor and clean up constantly. I have installed all the safe-keeping programs, but again, the problem persists. The only reason I can think of this happening is maybe because I installed League of Legends the night before, because everything is mostly Adware or PUPs.

After googling I assumed worse case scenario that I had a rootkit; I thought Dan's Nuke and Boot could solve this, but maybe the quickNuke option can't clean it. If anyone knows a solution without me having to nuke, that would be greatly appreciated!

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

First of all, Dan's Nuke and Boot is actually a version of dban which is used to effectively wipe out all data on a harddrive. Nothing is supposed to survive this program. I need to see the results of all these scans to see what we're dealing with.

but again, the problem persists.
Please list these problems and only post the logs from the HP computer. It would be too confusing to try to clean two computers in the same thread.

Please download AdwareCleaner onto your Desktop. AdwCleaner  (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/)

Before starting AdwCleaner, close all open programs and internet browsers, then double-click on the AdwCleaner icon.

If Windows prompts you as to whether or not you wish to run AdwCleaner, please allow it to run.
When the AdwCleaner program will open, click on the Scan button as shown below.

AdwCleaner will now start to search for malicious files that may be installed on your computer.
To remove the files that were detected in the previous step, please click on the Clean button.

AdwCleaner will now prompt you to save any open files or data as the program will need to reboot the computer. Please do so and then click on the OK button. AdwCleaner will now delete all detected adware from your computer. When it is done it will display an alert that explains what PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) and Adware are. Please read through this information and then press the OK button. You will now be presented with an alert that states AdwCleaner needs to reboot your computer.
Please click on the OK button to allow AdwCleaner reboot your computer.A log will be produced. Please copy and paste this log in your next reply.
