Post by: golfman60 on December 20, 2017, 09:55:30 AM
Using SpamButcher to catch unwanted email Spam. Recently on some Spam the program will barf and this will pop up: run-time error'2147417848 (80010108) method of object failed it becomes necessary to restart the program. Can't get help from provider as they don't exist any longer. Anyone that can help it would be appreciated.

I just use the sites spam blockers...not enough gets thru that i need a 3rd party app.

And the ones that do i report and delete...makes their filters even more efficient.

what is your OS and version?
are there any updates for SpamButcher?
did it start mucking up after a recent Windows update?

you could try another one called MailWasher, been around for ages, and I've seen it run on Win10.

using windows XP, no updates to my knowledge and SpamButcher web site is defunct, so no help there.  This just started happening recently, maybe a couple weeks ago. Prior it's never had a issue. I looked at mailwasher but I like the SpamButcher better.

try doing a reinstall over the top and see what happens.
failing that, uninstall, reboot, reinstall.

failing that, I have set Outlook to only download the email headers and from them, decide whether I download the whole email or delete it before it ever gets to my PC.
in other words, exactly what MailWasher used to do.

For last day or so all has been working perfect but haven't gotten any of the funky emails either for some reason. Maybe it's fixed!

any way to export that saved senders list?

You can export everything to your desktop which I've done. I then uninstalled the program, shut down and restarted the computer. I then reinstalled the program, reinstalled the exported file and same problem. I'm going to delete the saved bad senders but before I do it any comments?

I'd love to replace it if only I could find one similar. Any that I've tried were either so complex to use or they didn't work, at least for me anyways. Anyone know of a simple one similar?

Most current free mail services have their own server-side spam blocking, and you can get the same capabilities regarding blocking spam in most E-mail clients.

And when it was more relevant, SpamButcher was rated as one of the worst spam blockers- it was practically considered worse than not using one because of it's quirks, like only supporting POP3.

About 6 months ago, I dropped my landline, which required finding a new ISP since I had been using DSL internet service from my phone company, i.e. landline, provider.  This meant I also had to transition my email from the former ISP-provided email account to something else.  I chose to go with Google's gmail.  In my opinion, gmail does a good job of automatically sending certain email messages to the Spam folder.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts and recommendations but believe I've got it fixed. I was reading somewhere that other programs on the computer can cause a fault like that so started looking and found my Excel program would work but kept saying it needed to replace a file that was damaged. I put in the CD as requested, it fixed the problem and also the one with  Spam Butcher I guess because it 's not looked back since and is working perfectly. Anyone else have a problem similar with the same error message you might want to look at some of your other programs, one of them may be the culprit.
Best Regards,
Gary Goynes

love it or loathe it, maybe it's time to dust off MailWasher.
Title: Brand new problem, Motherboard
Post by: golfman60 on February 12, 2018, 12:02:28 PM
Motherboard on my computer appears to have gone belly up. It's about8 or 10c years old so it'd possibly time. using my wife's old Dell but it at least works pretty well. Now here's my problem, motherboard is a CG5270 Asuz and finding a new one is near impossible. Used are available but i prefer a new one. Does anyone know of an available replacement  that is an exact match I can bolt right in the old one's place? I'm running Windows XP Professional and would appreciate any help in this area.
Thanks

a few things to consider.

that's a socket 775 board, so yes, that will be all but impossible to find new.
eventually you are going to have to replace it with a more modern gen one, and that'll force the upgrade of the RAM, CPU and PSU.
so serious thought is needed on whenever you go down that path now or go cheap with just a mobo and gamble the system hangs together for a few more years.
and even if you can just replace the mobo, XP will consider there has been too much hardware changes and will want to be reinstalled.

Thanks Mark for your reply. Being in between a rock and a hard place, I'd like to  get a new computer but a bunch of the needed software on my XP won't run on the newer windows 10. Not sure what to do!!

one solution I use for old XP-only software that simply can't be updated to be Win10 friendly is to use a Virtual Machine.  (VMware Workstation 12 Player, free for non-commercial use, in my case)
