Title: Java Applet problem on Windows 98
Post by: pamebabby on December 17, 2005, 07:16:21 PM
If anyone can help me, I would appreciate it so much. I have a Compaq Presario, running Windows 98. My modem recently quit, and I had it repaired at a shop. Upon return, the computer would not let me play any on-line games. A screen came up that said, "applet not found." I downloaded java, and now the games will load (slowly) but freeze up. I have to manually shut the tower off, and re-start the computer, because even the mouse freezes....it also makes a weird, "chattering" noise when frozen. The shop checked it out and said nothing was wrong, even re-booted it for me. Still having the same problem. It is driving me crazy. Can anyone help? Thank you.

So it works totally fine except when you are using Java to play these online games, or there are other issues?

Have ou got all of the Windows 98 updates? Did they reload the operating system? Just adding a modem is a simple thing and shouldn't have anything to do with Java implementation

Thanks for speedy reply...yes, all other on-line experiences are great. My daughter has XP, and says mine is faster than hers is. It only freezes during an on-line game. It's very frustrating, as I paid for Pogo on AOL, and can't play anything. Also, EA games is no help. They keep saying to re-install Java...I did twice, and Java says it is working. Other than the game issue, I have no trouble at all. The repair shop I had it in says there is absolutely nothing wrong with the computer...so I am confused. ??? All the shop said they did was install a new modem for me, and when I asked them to check out this problem with the games, they said they "rebooted" it. That's all they did, as far as I know.

Did you uninstall the old Java first? That sometimes is required, rather than just installing a newer or different version. Give that a try from Add/Remove Programs in COntrol Panel.

Yes, that was done. The new modem is the only one there. Sorry to be a pain. :-[
