Title: Update Shenanigans ... Again!
Post by: mrclose on April 27, 2018, 04:53:13 PM
Windows 10 Home Desktop (x64)
LENOVO 90BG003JUS Lenovo H50-55
AMD A10-7800 Radeon R7
ST2000DM001-1ER164 [Hard drive] (2000.40 GB)
11212 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory

Every-time an update is rolled out I have major problems!

The last time it took me six months of searching, posting to forums and finagling to straighten it all out!
(The last update messed up my display settings)

This time is different but I fear .. it is going to be another six month adventure!

If you can see the following screen shots clearly then you can see that I have a problem!?

You'll notice the Awaiting Restart in the second screen shot?
I have tried restarting the computer (As it claims is needed) which accomplishes absolutely nothing!

That Awaiting Restart stays there and I am convinced that it is only there to "Drive Me Nuts"!
(I finally learned my lesson after the 8th or 9th 'restart!')

I've tried just about every tool known to help with these types of problems without success.
Any help will be much appreciated!

Should I delete all of these 'updates' and start anew?
(Will that help?)

I also receive this message when I run the troubleshooter which says that it (the troubleshooter) can't fix it ...

Dear MrClose

Some suggestions with updating Windows 10 if you are running a 3rd party security program it is a good idea to disable it until the updates are installed. Windows updates are making low level changes to the operating system which security programs may stop happening causing the update to fail.
Make sure the security software is running again before using the computer after the update.
If there has been failed updates it's a good idea to clear the update cache and re download the update. This link explains how to do this.

  https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/mckittrick/windows-update-issues-clear-windows-update-cache/

Normally Windows creates a restore point before attempting to update, so if there is any  problems you  either remove the update or do a system restore until the update is sorted.

For what it is worth.
I have had trouble with Windows 10 updates and it was driving my crazy. Have hou ever hear the concept of things going bad when you are not prepared?
Amway, I started doing backups and having at hand tools to install Windows again. Somehow it seems that made things better. Or at least the is the way I remember it. With the right tools at hand I just revert to a backup or install over again.
In the process I did, finally, find a bad sector on one of the hard drives I use.  So that drive now is doping backup duty and shall do longer be used aa a live drive.

My recommendation is this: Double check you hardware and connected devices.  Format and prepare a hard drive and do a clean install of Windows 10 from your instillation media. You might have to do it twice just to become familiar with the things that might happen.

Here is a free tool I like; Mini Tool Partition Wizard .
https://www.minitool.com/
I my case, I would mount the suspect drive as an external device, then delete all partitions. Next I would make a partition on the whole drive and then do a surface scan with the tool. It takes hours, but it can repair a bad drive ion some cedes. Because that drive had only one bad sector, I will use it as a backup, but not as a working drive. Earlier I had use the Sea Gate diagnostic and did not find the bad sector.

I hope this is of some help.  :)

I've run tests on my drive and it passes them all.
(Tests by the drives manufacturer and separate tests by independents)

The protection on my pc is Microsoft Defender which shouldn't interfere with the updates?
(I also run malware scans periodically)

I am at a loss.  :'(

You are correct about the above not effecting windows updates. It's when you have other security software running on windows start up which can effect updating windows.

Have you cleared the Update cache as I said in my last post ?

Thank You and yes I cleared the cache.

I don't have any other security programs on start up except windows defender.
Not even malwarebytes.

I just ran the windows update assistant.
My understanding is that if you have the latest update the tool will say "Thank You" and show no other updates?

Does that only mean that the update has been successfully downloaded but not necessarily installed?

I ask because as you can see in my screenshot below that I got the "Thank You" from the assistant but my update page still shows the "awaiting restart" to install update!?

I am totally confused??

The Update Assistant is for updating to a new version of Windows 10, not for installing "normal" updates. It will say you are on the latest if you are on 1709.

Well that explains that. :(

Thank You.

I had something like this on my wife's LENOVO laptop and it seams like I had to make sure no external devices (USB) where connected.  Then when it did the restart you would see the updates actually get applied.  By that I mean the percent done would show up and eventually get completed.  Give that a try if you have not got past is yet.  Good LUCK!

Seems like a lot of folks are having this problem?
I'm giving up!

What's funny is that at one time I was searching for a way to stop automatic updates.

I discovered that you can't stop the updates on the home edition computers!
(Only on the pro and enterprise editions)

Looks like Microsoft has done for us what we couldn't do ourselves!;)

On Home, You can set the startup type to "disabled" for the Windows Update Service in Services (Start->Run "Services.msc"). This will disable Windows Update altogether which means you cannot check for updates either- You'd have to turn it on again first.

Only delays it all.

I've tried that and every tool and work-a-round that others claim to work!

Eventually, upon shutdown (Or even without shutting down) the pc goes into update mode and you can't do a thing about it.

Foolishly, I even unplugged the pc when this happened only to find the pc would update when restarted!

Disabling the Windows Update prevents it from checking or installing updates.

It doesn't prevent updates that have already been downloaded/installed from completing their updates when they require a reboot.
