Why does System File Checker pop up every time I start up the computer. I really don't want this, so if someone could please tell me some easy way to get rid of it that would be greatly appreciated

How to enable / disable scandisk from running after improper shut down.
Cause:
Versions of Microsoft Window 98 and later are designed to automatically run scandisk after the computer has been improperly shut down or rebooted. This is done as a safety measure to help ensure no data corruption occurred during the improper shut down / restart.
Answer:
This feature can be enabled or disabled in the msdos.sys file by changing the AutoScan= section. Additional information about the msdos.sys, hot to edit it and its values can be found on our msdos.sys page.
MSDOS.SYS
AutoScan= Allows Windows 95 OSR2 and above to scandisk the hard disk drive if the computer was improperly shutdown. The default is 1. Setting the value to 0 causes the computer to not scandisk the hard disk drive. Setting the value to 1 prompts the user for scanning the hard disk drive (scan begins if no input for 60 seconds). Setting the value to 2 allows for automatic scanning (no prompt).

The sfc.exe command is an external command that is available in the below Microsoft Operating Systems.

I don't recall ever needing to use it with 98?
I do recall scandisk running at bootup when Windows was unhappy with a shutdown.

Ok sorry about the wait. Now it's definitly System File Checker and i'm definitly using Win 98 and i'm shutting the computer down properly. I don't know how or why this happened it just did. And Mac it sounds like your on the right track but I don't understand alot of that.

Take a look in msconfig and see if it's listed there under the starup tab.
You could also download 'Autoruns' from http://www.sysinternals.com that should at least tell you where it's starting from.

SFC is located in Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System Infomation and once in system infomation I have to go to tools drop down menu and System File Checker. The problem is I can't find that using Run.
Also what is DWORD? And FED I tried that and it's not in there at all.

If you want to remove an autostartup, then Start-->Run...-->Type regedit. Then press F3 and seach for "Run", when you find the Folder Run just look for the program that always startsup and delete it !

go to www.download.com and search for startup and download a program, that has a good rate and download it !!

Jeronimo_Mc_Kinsley thank god I actually understand what your saying but are you sure it's ok to just delete System File Checker or is there a particular folder I have to delete if so which one should I delete - Backup, Changes, Deleted or Log. Thanks

Yup it's O.K 2 delete the entry in the registry ! (But ONLY IN THE FOLDER OF STARTUPS) and I as I wrote... u can also just look for a Startup Manager.

SFC is an intrinsic part of Windows 98 - DO NOT DELETE IT!
When exactly did this problem start? Did you do anything immediately prior to it occurring?

start/run/msinfo32
click tools
click system configuration utility
click startup
look through the list and see if it is there. if so, uncheck it. reboot.
if it is not in the list, click win.ini tab. expand windows (click the +)
look at run=
if it is there, delete it (not the entire line, just the file name)
follow above advice - DO NOT DELETE IT FROM THE SYSTEM

I apologise beforehand if I've got the wrong end of the stick here but..... Madness? Are you saying that SFC is not a legitimate component of Windows 98?

Backdated is absolutely correct. SFC is a part of W98.
