Title: Deleted photos on my Android phone by mistake
Post by: KerryE on November 13, 2018, 07:55:07 AM
While transferring/deleting stuff from my LG V30 Android phone to PC, I have deleted loads of pictures by mistake.
Alas, this seems not to be simple to rectify, but hopefully someone can help.

On my PC in file explorer I went to the folder on the Android called DCIM/Camera - 'Camera' is where all the images are.
Somehow I deleted the folder 'Camera', no warning came up and everything was deleted.

On the phone I have checked the Trash folder in the Gallery, they are not there.
Google photos was not enabled sadly.
I turned my phone on and off and it has created a new folder 'Camera' which is empty, (probably shouldnt have done this but was a bit shocked I guess)

Is there a way of recovering the pictures?

I saw an App 'Disk Digger Photo recovery' - but is seems it only recovers thumbnails, unless you Root the device, which does not sound like a good idea.
Is there another way?

You deleted it for good my friend. You could try using Recuva. That has worked good for me, but you will have to run it from your computer. You will have to select the the phone in the list and it will scan it as a storage device. It is not a guarantee, but it could possibly recover some, but not all. Flash memory is not the best at recovering data from.

Best of luck man.

Some providers store pics and backups online in your account...Call them.

I dont have any auto backups working (but I will in future!)

Recuva - I downloaded, but correct me if I am wrong, Recuvva looks for a drive number so it cant even see that my phone is connected to the PC!
So, as far as I can see, Recuva cant scan any mobile phone at all, ever?.

How do you make Recuva see the phone device? (In file explorer I can see that the phone is connected)

When you start the wizard you want to click Next >, All Files, Next>, in a specific location and your phone should be there... haven't tried it with a phone myself, you might have to do some experimenting! It won't hurt since all you will be doing is recovering, not deleting. Lol

To use recuvva you need to set the phone as a usb mass storage device.

!!!!!!!!!!DON'T Load apps onto the phone until you complete the recovery !!!!!!!!!!

As shown here  https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-215109/
You need to tap the developer options until the warning comes up.
After doing the above the phone shows as a usb drive which recuva can work with.

I use the paid version of
https://www.easeus.com/android-data-recovery-software/free-android-data-recovery.html

which doesn't require rooting the phone or setting to usb mass storage.

recuva is a good option but only limited to SD-Card. I couldn't recover it from my phone memory though.

I have enabled USB de-bugging.
Also, did USB tethering on the phone.

But on my PC I can never get a drive letter for the device?
Any ideas on why this is?

It's because it's not a mass storage device. I don't think you will be able to recover this very easily. I have looked around and everywhere states that it is limited to the SD card.

Sorry Bud! Make sure to make backups of your photos with google drive or a program similar to that.

Reading various articles it seems that newer Android phones did away with the true 'USB storage device' option as it caused too many problems.
When USB debugging is enabled the transfer options are only MTP/PTP (media/photo) but not 'USB mass storage' - so that is why the PC does not give a drive letter for the device.
At least that is my understanding.

But surely there is a way of recovering my photos!

Dude, you deleted them and it was in flash/solid-state memory. It is on your phone on top of that and uses a different file system than what most recovery programs use anyways. Just be careful next time. If you cannot get to make the phone show up in a data recovery manager, I guess your photos are toast. It is what it is. Be careful when deleting things. I remember one time where I accidentally deleted around 120 GB of various tech support programs and windows .iso files from my backup drive. The problem was, I didn't have it on the target computer. But, I even had a backup, for my backup! I then restored from there very carefully.

The lesson to get from this is, be sure to backup your files often. But what's done, is done. Might as well start taking care now than later!
