Title: The Start Menu
Post by: Guzeppi on December 25, 2018, 09:52:59 AM
In Windows 10 the Start Menu has frozen.  Usually, I am able to scroll up and down the menu, but now this is impossible.
Have tried powershell and fsc/scannow, but they did not solve the problem.

Can you help, please?  I am dizzy from hours of trial and error, leading nowhere.

Many thanks in advance.

Joe Busuttil

P.S. Sorry, cannot attach an image of the frozen menu to make my problem clearer.  Have tried Browse, Open, Paste, but still cannot manage. Perhaps, if it's not too much of a bother, you can let me know how to attach an image?

The menu you posted in that image is NOT the Start Menu.  That's the right-click context menu that appears when you right-click on the Start button.  Try Left-clicking on the Start button and you should see the Start Menu.

Thanks very much for prompt reply, but unfortunately your tip did not work.

Thanks, too, for letting me know the different definitions of "context" menu and "start menu".

Perhaps there is some other way of accessing the scroll down (Start) menu, please?

Kind regards.

What happens when you press the Windows key on your keyboard? (Right-hand side of the keyboard, between Ctrl and Alt keys)

Failure to bring up the Start menu when LEFT clicking on the Start Button can suggest a faulty mouse, especially if left clicks in other places often bring up the right-click choice. If the machine is a laptop, the problem could be with the touchpad, and plugging a known good mouse into a USB port can confirm this.

Nothing happened when I hit the button between the Alt Gr and the Ctrl button on the right side of the keyboard.

Changed the mouse, but no luck.

Any other suggestion, please?

Renewed thanks.

P.S.  The freezing of the start menu had happened to me a few times months ago, but the menu somehow
returned to normal.  Why is it not working now?

The Windows key is located on the LEFT side of the keyboard between the ctrl and alt keys.
What happens when you press this key?

The Windows key is located on the LEFT side of the keyboard between the ctrl and alt keys.

My UK keyboard has 2 Windows keys, one on the left between Ctrl and Alt, and the other on the right, between Alt Gr and the Menu/Application key. Some keyboards don't have a Menu/Application key, which is marked like this with 3 lines:

The Windows key looks like this

I assumed that the OP owned a standard  keyboard with 1 Windows key & was trying to get him on the right track.
Nothing happened when I hit the button between the Alt Gr and the Ctrl button on the right side of the keyboard.

The Alt Gr key is found mainly on non-US-standard keyboards.

Doh!  Sorry about that.  Should have said LEFT side!

The desktop icons pop up.  Nothing else.

Thanks again.

I'm not sure what you mean by "desktop icons" here. Aren't they showing all the time?
