Title: Echo dot 3rd gen
Post by: jbubb on January 22, 2019, 09:37:01 AM
We were given one for Christmas and have a Linksys router (WRT110). Our phone connects to it fine but when setting up the Amazon Alexa app, it connects but says bo internet availability. I called support and they say it must have been something I had done and want a one time fee to fix it. First of all, I don't like someone taking over control of my phone or computer. I did it for both and it helped in setting up my anti-virus protection on my PC. Any suggestions on what to do?

I find it hard to believe Amazon support is asking for a fee. And I don't know what you mean about "setting up" the Alexa app. There's noting to set up. You simply download the app to your phone and you use it to help refine the settings on your device.

Setting up Echo devices couldn't be easier - they are pretty much plug & play. So yes, if you are having an issue my money's on user error.

I've gone over setting up the app several times and each time, I get to where the Amazon 686 network shows up, connects but states there is no internet available. Where could I have messed up? I'm going to take it to another person who has a different phone (the one that gave it to us) and see if it has internet. He said his works fine and had no trouble setting it up. We're hoping that might get the bug or mistake solved.

I have no idea what the Amazon 686 network is. You are supposed to connect to your home network (assuming that's where the Echo device is located) using your home network password.

You got me on that one because it says to connect to the alexa app network or something similar to that. I'll look up the procedure and post it.

I've gone by this procedure several times and even tried it by my PC.

Did you continue to step 5? The "Amazon 686" network is an access point on the Echo. You connect to it and then you continue setup in the Alexa App to have the Echo connect to your home network.

I have 6 Echo device in my home and never did any of that. Simply plugged them in, let them find my home network, and connect. Ditto the app.

OK, I'll try that and get back with you. The procedure says I believe to connect with the Amazon xxx app.

BC_Programmer, yes, I have done that but will try it again. I may not be doing something right.

Allen, which version of Echo Dot do you have, mine is 3rd gen.

I have 3 Echo Shows, 1 spot and 2 dots (2nd & 3rd gens). They all work the same, it has nothing to do with which generation they are.
