Title: Getting Browser Working on Old Computer
Post by: baileyliz on April 09, 2019, 05:32:14 PM
I have a Dell DU7670 running on Windows XP 2002 that I'm trying to get on the internet.  I was going to use IE in order to download Chrome, but IE is displaying the "cannot display the webpage" error.  I used the diagnostic and it said there was a problem with the Winsock provider catalog, and it could be reset to the default configuration.  I said yes to this and the computer restarted and when I tried IE again I got the same error and the same diagnostic.  When I try to run ipconfig the box pops up for a second and then disappears.  Can anyone help me, please? Thanks!

Which version of Windows XP do you have?
You should be using XP Pro SP-3.
And you have to get a newer browser.
Sea Monkey is a browser by Mozilla that has legacy versions for old systems.

I use it on my old Dell XP system and it works food.

Hi

As it is a desktop and quite old, perhaps the date and time are incorrect due to a flat cmos battery. If it is wrong you can reset it in control panel , date and time.
If you want to run ipconfig you need to start an administrator cmd prompt.
Click the Start button. In the Search programs and files box that appears just above it, type cmd . In the results, above the search window, right-click cmd and select Run as administrator. If a User Account Control prompt pops up, click Yes.
Running chrome on XP, it keeps saying it is not supported. So as Geek suggested Sea Monkey or as i think Opera might be good options instead.

Use a computer that has internet access to download the installer to a USB thumb drive, then plug the thumb drive into the XP machine and run the installer.

Except many XP machines lacked USB support...

DU7670 is a Dimension 4700, so it has USB Ports.

In my experience, by the time XP came around, USB was pretty commonplace.  I'm sure some XP machines didn't have it but I believe most did.  Thanks to BC_Programmer for the info regarding the OP's machine.
