have a cloned refill but still get error message,have gone into control panel/devices and printers/epson 455 and printing preferences,maintenance,extended settings,unchecked "enable epson status monitor" and still get "cannot recognise", etc etc so have epson stopped the use of cloned cartridges?

Probably so...HP did it years ago.
