Title: Chrome freezing upon waking from sleep
Post by: jbubb on March 23, 2021, 11:33:42 AM
My PC has started freezing after being woken from sleep and I can't seem to find the right solution to fix this. By frozen, I mean the page can't be scrolled by using the mouse wheel. I can close the browser and open another page or the same page (site) and everything is normal again.

1) Is the computer freezing or is it just the browser? If just the browser, is it all browsers or just whichever one you use as your default?

2) Does the same thing happen if you don't use sleep?

I've been using the same browser for years and is my default. I'm almost sure if I don't use sleep, it won't happen, the thing is, it happens when it wakes from sleep which it never has happened before.

Please answer my questions.

Question (1) I haven't checked it on other browsers because I don't like other browsers. I use Chrome BTW.
Question (2) Not a good question. If I don't use sleep, it wouldn't freeze when awoken from sleeping ... because then it wouldn't be sleeping. ::)

Question1 - Is the computer freezing or just the browser?

And for troubleshooting purposes you MUST try a different browser to see if the problem is just with Chrome or is system-wide.

The computer isn't freezing. For example, if there is a clickable address (site) it will call it up but it won't scroll down the page or even refresh the page properly. If I close out the page and call it up again everything is back to normal. I will try it with another browser to test whether it does the same thing.

OK, I let the computer go to sleep in Firefox and it didn't freeze.

Then it would appear the problem is with Chrome. You can try uninstalling it, rebooting, and reinstalling to see if that fixes the problem.

And in the future, a better topic might be less confusing ;)

A better topic? Did I not make myself clear enough to what my problem is? I know sometimes I don't describe things in-depth enough or should I have stated my problem in the browser section?

Your topic reads: Computer Freeze. I had to keep asking if the computer was freezing or just the browser. It would have been better with a topic something along the lines of: Chrome Browser Freezes After Waking From Sleep.

Just something to keep in mind for the future, that's all ;)

My Chrome browser which I like has a problem when woken from sleep (it doesn't scroll or refresh). It's been suggested (from here) to uninstall chrome and re-install it. If I do that, I would lose all of my speed dial icons. How can I keep from losing my speed-dial savings?

Do you mean your bookmarks? If so, here's how to backup and restore you Chrome bookmarks: https://www.howtogeek.com/440339/how-to-back-up-and-restore-your-chrome-bookmarks-locally/

Do you use Speed dial? Speed-dial isn't necessarily just bookmarks, it is sites a person has saved after visiting that site. I have previously lost all of my saved sites by uninstalling Chrome and re-installing. I would rather not have to go through it again.

There are two or three experiments and features that Chrome has been running for some time. Whether any of them are more aggressive after coming out of sleep I cannot say, but I would disable them anyway.

Automatic Tab Discarding - this saves memory by pausing tabs after a certain time. I use Opera which is based on Chrome, and it had the same issues. Someone wrote an addon which prevents this from working, I have it installed, there are no settings & no permissions needed.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/disable-automatic-tab-dis/dnhngfnfolbmhgealdpolmhimnoliiok

Window Occlusion - this calculates if the active tab is behind another window, and pauses it accordingly - it can be disabled:
Copy and paste this into your URL bar: chrome://flags/#calculate-native-win-occlusion
Change the dropdown from "Default" to "Disabled"
Click the button in the bottom right to Relaunch Chrome

chrome://flags/#intensive-wake-up-throttling
This option will Throttle Javascript timers in background, possibly affecting games and other high use pages
Same as above to disable it - mind out that this may increase CPU usage higher than it normally is for Chrome, if your computer can handle it then ok.

OK Allen, you were right on the bookmarks but while saving the speed dial thumbnails is similar it still a bit different I found. You call up the speed dial page, click on settings in the top right corner, go to more options and then click on import/export. It will then tell you what each does. After clicking export, copy all of the text that appears and save it. After reinstalling Chrome, re-install speed dial and go through the same procedure except click on import. You then copy the text you saved and paste onto speed dial.

I uninstalled and re-installed Chrome but it didn't do any good. I was able to save my speed dial thumbnails as I stated in another topic which helped a lot. It doesn't happen in Firefox or a word document, just Chrome. For example, if I'm on Computer hope and my PC goes to sleep, I can't scroll or refresh the page properly (grayed out). It will however allow clicking on a link/topic on whatever page I'm on.

I merged all three threads on the same topic. Please keep everything in one thread.

Gismo. I missed your response for whatever reason but do appreciate your input. I added the tab suspension extension after the computer began freezing and kind of like it. The second suggestion isn't a problem as my tabs line up beside each other and not on top of each other. I'd rather not do the third one.

OK, that's fine. Any other suggestions I might try?

I have seen other people suggesting that turning off "Automatically detect settings" for Proxy may help the freezing problem.
If you do use a proxy you won't be able to use this tip.

In Windows 10 open the Start menu, type in "Proxy" > Click on "Proxy Settings" then turn off "Automatically Detect Settings"

I'm pretty sure I've tried that already.

Also definitely change this setting, it has been mentioned so many times by people having the same problem in Chrome, Edge, Opera etc browsers as they are all based on Chrome.

Type the following into the Address Bar: chrome://flags/#calculate-native-win-occlusion
Change the setting to Disabled

In a reply you said "The second suggestion isn't a problem as my tabs line up beside each other and not on top of each other."
The setting is happening if a screen saver comes on, you minimise the window, another window is in front, and also sleep.

Hey Gizmo, I tried the occlusion tip and it worked. Thank you so much for helping me with this aggravating situation.
