What operating system? If XP, do you have SP2 on there? When did this start? Any spyware/adware/virus protection in place and being used? All Windows updates applied?

More info needed.

What program do you use for email?  Do you have other progams installed that can also be used for email?  Example, you use Outlook Express for email but you also have Outlook (a component of MS Office) installed.

You may have MSN Messenger and it notifies about your HOTMAIL account. Even it's webmail , it automatically shows unread messages in your account.  Mine does like...or Outlook as above said.

Grab yoursef a copy of TweakUI (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx) or better still, XP-AntiSpy (http://xp-antispy.org/content/view/17/45).
