That's a lot of info BUT the important thing is what happened prior to this as I assume it used to work correctly? Did it ever work? If not, what has changed? Are you the administrator this computer? The only user? Have you monkey aout inside the case or played within the BIOS? Have you checked the manufacturer's site for the latest drivers, and etc.

Thanks for your response. I reformatted the hard drive and installed win 98se after having big problems trying to reinstall win xp etc, but have not had sound since. I have recently reinstalled xp again but still have no sound! it did work prior to this, I have not messed around inside the computer .. I am totally stumped as to what is going on with it, have tried down loading the Albatron km18g drivers but can't seem to get them to operate ...Cheers Ted

If you go to performance and maintenance / system / hardware / device manager... Do you see any devices listed with an exclamation point ! or question mark?
If so, right-click on the device and select 'uninstall". Restart the computer and browse for where you have the driver when prompted. If the driver you downloaded is in zipped form, extract it before doing any of this.
As far as the CD burning goes... Newer versions of Nero sometimes don't work with older burners. Older versions sometimes don't work with newer burners... Most CD burners require no driver. Some do come with a driver hidden in the burning software disk that comes with it. Unfortunately, the only time I've seen this is with a combo CD-R / DVD player drive very much like the one you have. If you lose that disk, or change to a version of Windows that doesn't support it, you can have problems.
Good luck!!!
