Title: Ex-Member bug
Post by: Zylstra on August 04, 2006, 11:48:52 PM
I need someone to give me very detailed information on the Ex-Member bug, and how it works, and what causes it to occur.
I am reporting this bug to YaBB right now, (and have been for about a week).
I tested the ex-member bug, but could not get it to work for me.

Could someone please explain?

It seems random. No real way to track something if you can't find a pattern. :(

Have you seen this error?

An Error Has Occurred!

The board field does not accept / in the query string

I think YABB is inserting extra lines of code that shouldn't be there.

There's also "Error 300: No such file or directory.". Maybe it's adding extra code that deletes the thread?

the only thing we can be almost certain about this is that SOME CODING is causing this... mabey somthing said in the last message, or just the fact that the threads are getting too large, or mabey computer hopes forum unravling around us.. are the letters going to start falling off the page? is this the beginning of the end of computer hope as we know it!?
But the post last before the bug hit just contained a quote, and the words

YaBB bug fix member asks the following
"Before we go on, do you run the distro package or the CVS package ?
Reason for asking is that the distro still has this bug, but as far as I know this was solved in the CVS package long ago.
I'm not sure there was a patch released to fix this for non CVS users though."

Does anyone know what we have here?

What?  So they know how to fix it, but are still making a buggy version available and are calling it the "stable" version?!

BTW, I think it's pretty obvious which version we're using...

Well, you see, this person said they were not sure if it was fixed or not.
(Its very possible that they didn't know how to fix it, or that there is more than one version of the bug)
And I KNOW that there is more than one version of the bug.

YaBB is rather embarrassing then, isn't it?  There are better alternatives.  I vote for transferring the lot to an SMF forum.

How about vBulletin? It seems every other forum I've been on uses it, and they're pretty stable.

Why do that an loose every account and message on this forum?
Besides, YaBB is the second most downloaded forum software available.
What on earth makes you all think that others wouldn't have bugs of their own?
(Unless your looking for adventures in: NEW BUGS!)

True, but it isn't free.

You wouldn't - the data can be migrated to the new forum.

According to whose figures?  Besides, MS have the most used OSes out there, but that doesn't make them the best, not by any means.

A little thing called experience...  Not, not bug-free, but the bugs that exist are less prevalent, and far less irritating.

I paid for Windows ME and got a whole heap of trouble.  I didn't pay for Ubuntu Linux and didn't get a whole heap of trouble.  So I guess you don't get what you don't pay for...

Check out http://www.computerhope.com/promote.htm for great information.

Rob:
I read your post. I guess you have a lot of great points. I really thought that member setup was just stuck the way it was, I had no idea that they could be transferred. (It sounds like a painful process)

The only other forum I have used that I really liked was, I think it was, SMF. Oh, just checked, it was Invision.

the statistics of the most downloaded forum software came from something I was reading. (Though I cant remember what) If I find it, I will tell you.

I prefer phpBB, Its easy to set-up, Easy to use and best of all is free!

SMF generally has a wider, more up to date feature set (from the users' point of view) than phpBB.  But they are both sound choices, and I have not seen as many bugs on a phpBB forum as we get here on YaBB.

Well, we all also have to look at the features as well...
Although this forum is buggy, it does have many features that are worth of suffering the bugs.
In fact, almost EVERY bug can be fixed if you have access to the Admin Panel.
But, Nathan seems to no longer be here, so he cannot fix the errors.

We could benefit from having a second Admin, one that's here more often.

Besides, then we can say:

"Always two Admins there are. No more, no less"

Well, I think we should just ask that GX1_Man be setup as the admin them, or at least a Gmod. Gmods cannot change the entire forum, just what the admin specifies they can change.

Now, come on, GX1_Man. You compare anything to winME and it puts WinME in the dust. Linux is great, true, but Windows ME defies the "get what you pay for" axiom. Heck, Windows 98 is better! That's really not a fair comparison. ;)

Honestly! I haven't had ONE single problem with Windows ME!
I've had MORE problems with 98! Too many BSOD's!
Title: Re: Ex-Member bug
Post by: Dilbert on August 09, 2006, 05:55:06 PM
Oh, I got the BSOD with 98, for sure. But when I got ME I got a BSOD an average of 10 times a day, to the point where the computer wouldn't run long enough to do a virus scan. This had partly to do with our reliance on Norton at the time to protect the system (hey, we didn't know), and partly to do with ME's instability.

On Windows XP, I've gotten a BSOD maybe twice since I got my first copy of it way back in... can't remember... no matter. You can see why I like XP: Relative to other Microsoft OS's, it's extremely stable.

I don't think I have ever gotten BSOD on Windows XP, that's because its been replaced with other error messages.

But I really am not kidding: I haven't had any Windows ME problems.

when we had winMe my lil sister did something to the nav. files which would cuz the bsod at the logon screen sometimes, or right after you logged on.. sadly i wasnt too familiar with the art of reformating  :-[ so we had to take it to a gateway shop in the next town and they said they fixed it but the only pushed the bsod back til 10 mins after youve logged on.. then we got a new computer.

The NAV files?
You mean "Norton AntiVirus"? Of course it would give you BSOD. As well as BS!

Dilbert:
That BSOD message comes before Windows XP starts. It represents that there is a hardware error and that starting your computer may cause SERIOUS damage.
It also represents that my teacher has been trying to open the computers to eat the SPAM that she thought the SPAM filter caught.

LOL ;D

Actually, on several occasions I got a BSOD during my Windows session. I was unable to troubleshoot after the third time because it never came back.

Why'd I wait for numero tres for me to troubleshoot? My policy on troubleshooting. If it's a hardware problem, troubleshoot immediately. If it's a software issue, wait a bit and see if it was a fluke. :)
