A friend got hit with a trojan that wiped out a dll file from IE. Will re-installing WinXP cure this problem? We found the trojan and got rid of it.

Formatting and reinstalling will cure all Windows problems, for a while.

Do you get an error message citing a specific .dll? What is it?

wininet.dll by chance?

Too late. They found another WinXP home edition and installed it last night. Now they have Home Edition and Professional version on the computer. First thing I'll have to do is format partition F which contains the Home Edition. I found a wininet.dll file on the net and if I install that in Windows/System32 that should cure that problem. Fingers crossed.

Just another reason to format the drive and start fresh. ::)
Good luck. I'm sure both versions of XP are genuine also.

I'm not sure about their WinXP professional but I know that Home edition is a copy. I tried to format the partition F drive of the hard drive and it won't let me because it tells me that some program is using it. According to info I googled, this is supposed to work. I wonder if I could format it from DOS? I copied the Wininet.dll file to System 32 and got that working. Now if I could only get rid of Home Edition everything would be back to normal.

You cannot format it from within Windows. You have to boot with the legal XP CD in there and choose to format it (right after the EULA agreement when you press F8). And if you are trying to use the F drive you still have many problems. WIndows goes on the C drive. What else is on there?

Seeing how the Home Edition is a copy getting rid of it would be prudent...follow GX1Man's advice and follow up on his questions.

Thanks. I'll have to wait two weeks when they come back in town with the OS disc. BTW, I downloaded the wininet.dll from the net and copied it and it works fine.

wininet.dll by chance?
Sometimes I amaze myself. ;)

This problem has taken another turn. Her father took the computer to a repair shop. The only thing he could do was try to configure the anti-virus program(AVG) which I had already done and it cost him $40. He couldn't figure out how to remove the extra Windows XP Home Edition.
