My computer is telling me that I have a boot sector virus. I even tried to
reformat the hard drive to get rid of it but it won't work. It is a 5 year old
750 Mhz AMD Duron computer. How can I recover from this.
Thanks

Go into command prompt, and type
FDISK /MBR
This will fix the master boot record
Hope it helps
and Happy Computing

Where did you learn that Zylstra? ;)
That is true with Win 95 or 98 or ME and you boot from a boot disk.
The original poster left out a LOT of information, including his operating system. Let's see if he returns with that, and how he came to the conclusion he had a boot sector virus.

I learned that from you!
I guess it would require ME and under to do that. But, lets wait and see...

Heh, heh. ;) I knew that.
See one, do one, teach one.

Actually boot sector virii can be tough nuts to crack...so as GX1_Man says without alot more info on what you are running and how you determined you actually are infected that way we would all be just grasping at straws here,

I guess your right.
phbailey1usa:
Could you please tell us the name of the virus as well?

Might not remove the virus though...

But it could allow you to get to your desktop quickly without being stopped so much... like an escort.
I use FDISK /MBR to hide and secure all my Linux files.

I got a tip from a friend to check the ribbon cable from the HDD to the IDE port on the motherboard.
After I replaced the cable, I was able to reformat the HDD and reload Windows 98.
Thanks to all who tried to help.

The question was asked about how I arrived at the boot sector virus cause for my problem.
During my troubleshooting, I installed a Maxtor HDD and the computer would not let me format it as well. When I installed my MaxBlast cd, that is when a window came up something like Chip Away Virus detection detected a boot sector virus on my drive. The problem did not go away when I switched HDD's because it was on the MB end of the cable.
Thanks again

Thanks for telling us what the problem was

Viruses do not reside on a cable. Ever. ::)
Anyway, glad you are all fixed up.

(That's what I was thinking)
But, had it been a virus, it could have found other ways to spread.

Not through a cable, not through hardware, except for an infected hard drive. Only from a download or having/running an infected file.
-
BIOS Virus?
Are those still common?

After literally disappearing for 8 or so years because protection programs got so sophisticated they have recently reared their ugly head...i assume this is a result of the next generation of newbie hackers out there who have nothing better to do than keep us professionals employed.

Where do you work, Patio?

Self employed...all over the State.

If he only knew how well his thread turned out... :D

-
oh well he might come back
-
Then again if he in fact does have a bootsector virus chances are he can't get back...
