I downloaded and installed this "Windows 98 Upgrade Pack" thing (http://www.wupg98.co1.at/) and I didn't like it, so I went to uninstall it. That's when the problems started. Now my audio hardware won't work even though it's recognized and it looks like the uninstall was impartial. Running the uninstaller again does nothing. Any suggestions? BTW my computer is an IBM ThinkPad 760E, Win98SE. I guess at the worst I could format and reinstall windows but I REALLY don't want to do that! Thanks!

You could try re-installing drivers and running SFC.EXE or doing a Windows repair install to avoid losing user files.

Yeah, well maybe, just maybe, the Upgrade pack also contained little bits of malware.  Sounds like you might want to start off with major scannings :exclamation

Spybot search and destroy? I don't have an antivirus because the computer is never online

well I can't get anything on the computer because it refuses to recognize my MP3 player

How did you download & install the upgrade pack if your pc is never on-line :-?  If you downloaded it on another pc then transferred it to the Win.98 pc using any kind of removable media or any kind of network then you may have also transferred the malware.

There is a very clear lesson to be learned here. Don't install stuff like this unless you are willing  to  format and start over.  ;)

I guess the first thing I'm going to try to do is just reinstall Windows without formatting, even if it's just so that I can back up some of my files. Thanks!

that's what I'm going to do, and GX1_man a linux live CD wouldn't work because I can't boot from CD.

tried that.  the computer is like 9 years old. It only supports floppy and HDD

well I formatted it yesterday and the computer is working as good as a 150MHz pentium can ;)
no more upgrade packs for me!  :D

EDIT: I'm not very polite sometimes... Thanks for all the help!
