Right after bootup, I can't run any programs until after about 5 minutes. When I double click an icon, my mouse cursor turns to an hour glass for a moment then nothing happens. If I try this on several different programs, same thing. After about 5 minutes, everything I've double clicked pops up and the computer runs normal. This started some time ago and I can't remember what could have caused this to start.
I'm running Windows XP Pro SP-2.

What are you using for virus and spyware protection? That is always a good reason for these symptoms.
Have a read here:

If you post some details about your machine we can look further if this doesn't resolve it. See below.

AV running a system scan on startup possibly ? ?
-
I've tried using msconfig to clean boot and applications are still slow to start. I seem to remember reading somewhere that this is a known problem with older installs, which mine is, but since my computer was working ok then, I didn't read the whole article.

This still doesn't answer any of our questions...
-
See above questions. Up there. ::) ::) ::) ::)

Also you might try "Autoruns" to see what programs are startinat start up... I have roxio $80 program that starts up and runs major processes in the background so it will auto matically launch the 1 time a month I use it... kinda burns me up that a expensive program like this is actually the equivelent of most spywhere... Also bought a new media center and it ftp's to microsoft for God knows what and its start up is terrible....

It's probably calling Redmond to see if it is a legal copy. ;)

Sorry. I meant to say that even with nothing loaded, things are still slow. I do run Zone Alarm Security Suite and Spyware Doctor but they don't scan on startup. They load up pretty quickly, too. In fact, all of my auto start items load up fast. The stupid applications don't launch. I turn on my computer when I get home from work and go have a beer. When I'm finished, my computer's normal. [smiley=beer.gif]
BTW - I'm running an Athlon XP 3200+ with 1gb of ram, 120gb HDD, and a Geforce 6800GT video card. When my system's running, it's fast enough for me.

I turned off everything that isn't needed at start and my comp starts faster thatn any I've seen yet 3gig 512 ram... I also use pStart a very small prog. 1 mg, and just adding that to my start up about doubled the startup time....
I guess the next resonable question would be when did you knotice this and is it only at start up? do you notice slowness anywhere else?
-
Ohh another big start up hog is the quick launch bar...
Why doesn't someone write a program that waits until the necessary startup is finished and then launches tyour startup programs one by one waiting untill each one is finished... wouldn't this help the start up as you wouldn't be trying to start everything at the same time...

Are you on dialup, if so disable Windows Automatic Update in Services.

Well, after considering all of the info and non of it being applicable to my setup, I resigned that I would just put up with the slow apps startup until I upgraded to Vista. Then, one day, the problem has mysteriously vanished. All my applications now start up immediately after a fresh boot. Go figure..
Thanks for all your suggestions.

Upgrading to Vista was gonna be my next advice...
Glad it worked for you.

Oh yeah, Vista is going to solve it. Good one, Patio. ;D
