Title: My desktop background has moved! Please Help!
Post by: chriswright96 on November 13, 2006, 06:00:47 PM
Hello,

I have came accross a problem that has never happened to me before.
My desktop wallpaper has moved to the right, and I can't get it back to normal. I have tried setting new backgrounds, changing it from strecth to tile and center, changing resolution, absolutly everything that I can think of. It's been like this for a couple of days now, and it's starting to drive me mental.

Please help

Act of God? Random occurrence? Bad Karma?

To my knowledge, I have done absolutly nothing.
It started about a week ago. I have anti-virus/spyware software, and I am quite good at not downloading that kind of stuff.
I don't really know what else to say. :-?

wOw! :o I've never seen that before! Did you fix it from restoring?

I havn't tried restoring it yet, because if it deletes the updated system files that came with the vista transformation pack, I won't be able to restore the originals, as I don't have a Windows XP CD.

I've never seen it before either. It's weird.

Have you tried changing background?  Just wondering whether another background will do the same thing.

This is the sad tale of trying to do things on your main/production computer.  :-[  I wish folks (I'm not putting you down Chris  :) ) would take the time/effort/$ to have a test box handy to try all this stuff.  If at the least, a second hard drive that could be removed from a removable bay so you can try stuff like what Chris has and not worry about losing all your data.

Chris, this might be a good lesson for you.  Buy a removable hard drive bay (they're not expensive), get a second hard drive, and you're good-to-go.  Experiment until you're hearts content.  If it blows, it blows.  You're important stuff is safe on another drive.

Good luck  ;)

I do actually have a second hard drive. But when I install things such as the Vista transformation pack, even if I install it on the auxillary, will it not still change system files on the primary? I thought this would happen because that is where Windows is installed. I have a product recovery CD, which I was thinking about using. I've been trying to avoid using this, because my last desktop became pretty much redundent after doing this a few times. Would you advise completely rebooting a computer (Restoring factory settings and wiping files)?

Deo Gratis, by any chance do you know any programming languages? I'm interested in ActionScript (I know, it's technically not a programming language) and Delphi. If you know these, can you pass on your MSN e-mail. Iv'e done many things in ActionScript, and I'm trying to replicate them in Delphi, but I'm coming across some problems as I don't know the references to libary Items (I think that's what they are called ... where the compiler has built in procedures, and you call them. Like in actionscript, to find the sine of a number, it's Math.sin)

Thank You for your help.

Are you able to uninstall the Vista transformation pack ? ?

It certainly sounds like the culprit here...

Who wrote that software by the way ?

I could uninstall it, but I don't have the originall system files to replace it.

Chris,

Sorry, I'm not a programmer, just a lowly computer tech with his own business.

My advice to you would be:

a. back up all your data
b. wipe the drive and start over with a legitimate Windows cd (sounds like you might have to buy one)
c. get that removable drive bay I recommended + another hard drive (unless you want to use your second drive instead)

Now you can do all the things you want & not have to worry about losing data.

Oh, another thing.  Get Acronis True Image (newegg.com).  Make an image to some other place as M$ is a real punk when it comes to multiple installs in a short period of time.

Good luck!

I once tried the Vista Transformation Pack (written by Windows-X).
It was soon after that when I bought a Windows CD to reformat and reinstall Windows.
