what do you use to talk to people on your home / office network?

msn or is there a more efficient program that dosnt go through the internet ?

You can use winpopup or one of its replacements such as >RealPopup< (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Chat/LAN-Messaging-Clients/Realpopup.shtml) (free and much better than winpopup.

This uses the Windows LAN messaging service, which isn't great.  If you want a really good solution and have the skills to install it, the best free option is Jabber.  See the software FAQ for more details.
