Title: Cd Drive won't open!!
Post by: Void on November 17, 2006, 04:25:54 PM
Hey folks, love the forum you've got here; quick responses!

Anyhow, I've got what appears to be a basic problem; Cd-Drive decided one day it was gonna keep my CD.
Doesn't respond to the Eject button you get when right-clicking drive in My Computer,
doesn't respond to the Eject button on the drive front itself,
doesn't respond to the Eject button on my keyboard, hah.
It doesn't even know there's a CD in it...

This computer is an HP running XP sp2, the drive itself is a Lite-On Combo SOHC-4836K DVD reader/CD burner; came with the pc.
Considering this is an HP I thought it best to look to HP for a driver that might solve it, and, sure enough I found one.
Simple enough, problem solved right?

Wrong; the driver is firmware, meaning it needs to be on a bootable floppy or disc.  My computer is too cool to use a floppy drive of course... and my CD drive is still unresponsive...

So the question is, how can I get this drive open (keeping in mind I don't want to have to use a knife and pry the darned thing open ;D)?
Or, is there another way to get the firmware/driver to fix my problem?...
(I'm looking for a fix that doesnt require a floppy or blank cd, but so far the search is fruitless...)

Thanks in advance,
Void

(had to come back and edit... noticed I typed flopper drive instead of floppy!  Interesting typo..)

To open the drive look for a small hole in below your cd tray and insert a paper clip, multiple times until its open. If you're not sure what I mean try searching Manualing Opening up a Cd drive in google.

Actually I considered that, but this HP has a huge useless plastic cover over all the drives, and I'd rather not void any warranties, as this computer is not mine... not to mention I'm sure to break some plastic in doing so, HP loves to put things together awkwardly...

Sure I'll still do this if it comes down to it, but I was hoping there's an easier option.  Anything else you can think of?...

Thanks for the quick reply!

I posted about the paperclip hole idea before I actually looked at it... Great job on my part...

It's a bit easier to reach than I had assumed, I'm now on the hunt for an object to stab the thing with... but as I'm doing so, I'm realizing that getting it open doesn't exactly ensure that it will read a blank cd-r when I put one in there, considering it won't read the Audio CD still in it... so I doubt this will solve all of my problems....

First get the drive open. The CD in there may have problems also.  ;)

0_o!!  I've been reading that the computer should be turned off while poking the emergency eject hole...

Is this necessary?  Because I've been poking the thing a while now, while listening to some music on the computer to keep me from flippin out, haha...

If you have direct access to the hole a sewing needle or,straight pin also works just fine.

Awesome, got the thing open, retrieved my CD, popped a blank cd-r in there and I'm about to try the firmware.  Funny how it seemed to not let me use anything but a paperclip...

Thanks for the help dudes!  I'll keep this forum posted on the success and/or failure which is surely imminent.  8-)

Yeh I was afraid this would happen;

I have to burn an image onto a blank cd and then reboot with cd in it, and etc...

but as far as the drive's concerned I don't have a blank cd in there at all.

I've no idea how to get it to read and realize there's one in there... anyone have any ideas, or can maybe point me to a person/forum who might have some good answers?

Does the Cd drive actually show up in my Computer? Now this is an idea not sure if whats you have to do, but here I go. Right click on the cd drive and go to properties and somewhere it should say Enable burning on this drive. I Suggest not trying this until someone more Computer smart then myself, says its what to do.

Do you have restore points?

Do you have an install CD?

What operating system are you using?

What is the manufacturer and model number
of your computer?

If it's a HP computer and still under warranty, phone them up and tell them what's happened, they should happily fix it for you.

I do have restore points,

I do have a few install CDs,

It is an HP Pavilion running XP sp2,

I'm unsure if it has a warranty on it at all, much less if it still would be under warranty, I've had to open it up to fix a cable on the hard drive before... I could ask the guy who bought it, see if he got the warranty...
