Looks like the only option is to do a rerpair install...
-
Hello Archie - welcome to the forums.
Have a look at this.. (http://www.help2go.com/Tutorials/Windows/C:%5Cwindows%5Csystem32%5Cconfig%5Csystem_missing_or_corrupt.html) I suggest you print it so that it's readily available when you want to start the Recovery Console..
Good luck

Hi Dusty,
ok i have done chkdsk /r done some repair, however i did repair using windows before so i dont have any system restore point . So how do i go from here ?
Thanks !
-
Do you have a real WIndows CD as opposed to some sort of restore CD? If so, this should get you going:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx
-
Yea i have the original CD , but when i go to setup it dont let me repair.

Sounds like you have the OEM CD.Not an off the shelf after market
Windows CD like GX1_Man is talking about.
-
Yea i have the original CD , but when i go to setup it dont let me repair.
How are you "going to setup" exactly? What do you see on the screen? What does the CD say on it word for word?
-
ok this what it say when i go to set up. It give me 3 option.
- setup windows XP on the selected item
- to create a partition space on a unpartiton press c
- to delete a partiton space
-
But before that do you get an option to press R for a Repair?
-
yup the repair option is before this but it leads to recovery console.
-
OK, then, have a read:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx
-
i cant do a repair as the window dont have the option for me.
-install , delete , quit ..... for me :(
-
If the instructions at below site are followed step by step
and you don't get the option to repair.......Your CD of
Windows is OEM and not an after market copy you,or
someone bought at the store. You need to list the
Manufacturers Brand Name and the model nmber to
get further assistance.
Example:Mine is -'Gateway Computer, Model E4200'
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_install.htm
-
i brought my's copy from store. i did a repair but to no use.
-
If a repair install did not help you have other issues...
Backup the data you need and do a format and clean install...
Remember you will need to re-install all drivers and programs you are currently running.

I have told myself- street1-Thou shalt Not Start an Acronis Poll.
Acronis and a secondary hard drive does make things easy though. :D

hi guys finally i can make my com work !!!! yippy !
thanks for all who helped me GX1_man , patio and street1 and others.
ok here is how i done it. firstly i type all this in the recovery console.
md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak
delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default
then i found out then even with this i cant go to safe mode. But with this i can go to repair using windows CD. I did a repair finally i can use my com now.
However while i doing the repairing a few prompt pop out , something like .......... missing ...dll file .
so guys what should i do to make my com my stable , i just afraid without some dll file will cause my com to crash again.

Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your Windows CD handy...
Do this now that you can boot into Windows...
-
ok from here can i install sp2 and all the undates ?
-
Run what i suggested first...then re-boot and do your Windows updates.
-
*censored* it now i cant play my window media player.
-
Finish all your updates and other chores first.
-
hmm.... i have ran the sfc/scannow no problem . But when i install SP2 it just hang after " running processes after install " Causing the com to corrupt. Any solution ?
-
SP2 Pre-install Checklist (http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm)
-
By the way i using AMD 3000+ . So i dont think that is the source of the problem unlike intel.
-
The processor manufacturer is irrelevant.
-
I think he only read one short paragraph on the page and a 1/2 checklist i posted...
-
The cart is truly before the horse, then. ::)
-
hmmm..... when i repairing the windows the following warning pop out.
error code = 0x8007007f not found ..... system32\catsrv.dll
error system32\inetcomm.dll
error commonfiles\system\wab32.dll
error outlook express\msoe.dll
but when i do chkdsk and sfc/scannow no problem show up. So are this the cause of the unablitly of installing SP2 ?
-
Sounds like a copy of an XP CD to me...
Not to cast aspersions though.
-
Nay , my is the OEM version brought it from the shop. But my copy is the older version 2002 so not included SP1 & 2. For now what ever i do will most likly cause a hang. *censored* it !
Let say i log on to the net using that computer so to download all the update, will i get those backboor stuff , virus etc etc...... even thou i on the firewall and adware , spybot ?
-
You need to downlaod the SP2 file from Microsoft. Burn it to a CD and install it and your spyware and virus protection and THEN connect the cable to the internet. Not before.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx
-
hmm..... i think format is the solution to all this. Now my pc have two partiton if i format the C: will it affact the G: ?
-
No, not unless you choose to.
A good format and reinstall solves most Windows problems....for a while.

The best quote in the World in my humble opinion...
-
OMG !!!!
now i have format c: to my horror my H: cannot be read
-
Boot with your legal XP CD and follow the install instructions onscreen. The format is done during this procedure. Once Windows is installed then you should be able to read your other drive(s). If you have followed this procedure then post back with any issues. If you have not followed this procedure, what have you done?
-
Yup i follow all the instruction correctly. I think its not formated but somewhere went wrong. By the way i have a seagate 250GB harddisk.
-
Is this a SATA or an IDE drive?
-
SATA2 , just update with the SP2 sucessfully.
-
When instructed press F6 and insert the motherboard CD to load the SATA drivers. Without that Windows cannot load properly onto the drive.
What is the computer or motherboard make/model?
